There wasn’t a lot out there that could rattle a member of the BAU however the latest case had definitely unnerved JJ. JJ hadn’t wanted to talk to anyone on her team about what was troubling her because normally she tried to deal with these things on her own. But JJ went home to her husband Will and, despite having enough on his plate with a sick child, he was able to take one look at his wife and know something was wrong. So Will put their youngest to sleep and he made coffee for JJ so that she could talk to him if she needed to. And, on this case, she needed to.

JJ told her husband that they were on the way back from Seattle when they heard about the case and had to go to LA. Unfortunately, the bodies of two children that had been missing had ultimately been found burned in an abandoned building. So that case had eerily reminded Reid of another situation in San Diego. Where two more bodies of missing had also been found burned and in abandoned although not together. However, with the MO so close and there being a matter of both a girl and a boy being taken within short window, the BAU was forced to connect the cases.

Although, there was one major problem with investigating the cases even together and that was their Unsub. The Unsub was thorough enough to remove any trace of evidence with fire and he was also patient hence he could go years in between his kills. Which was exactly what he did between San Diego and LA. So there came a time where JJ and her team thought they might have to get back on the plane and leave LA because their Unsub would naturally make them wait around again. Only the Unsub had surprised them.

His window between kills had changed and he had kidnapped another girl before the BAU could even pack up. So the Unsub wasn’t getting the same type of pyro fulfillment that he would normally get from his job. His job usually would have been enough for him and why he could wait years before needing to kill again, but his job could be anything to do with fire. He could be a cook, a fireman, or involved with cremation. The BAU initial working profile described what kind of a job this man would be drawn to and it also stated that it was the fire that drew him to do many things.

The idea was that he liked burning his victims because there was the added adrenaline. But they didn’t understand why the Unsub was taking two children at a time. They originally thought maybe he had kids and that he was suppressing his desire to hurt them by taking it out on someone else. So they hadn’t changed their minds about that until Reid spotted where the next boy would be taken. Reid had looked at the map of where every child had been kidnapped and he found out that the Unsub had been working his way to LA the entire time. Meaning he wasn’t going to leave the city.

So Reid and the others took a look at their victims and tried to find out what their Unsub was possibly reliving and they thought about siblings. The Unsub’s victim would always look like each other and they could pass as siblings so the team knew who the next victim was. The next victim was going to be Francesca’s younger brother Roberto. Francesca usually walked to school with her brother yet Roberto had claimed to be sick and his mom had allowed him to stay home. However, JJ and Alvez had just been with the family.

The two BAU agents had tried to comfort them and eventually they left the house because there were cops right outside. Though the Unsub found a way to get around the cops. He had apparently burnt a car nearby so the cops left to go check out the scene and the Unsub was able to force himself into the house where he then knocked out the mother and kidnapped Roberto. So there was about five minutes between the time that JJ and Alvez left the house and when Robert had been taken yet the agents hadn’t known that they were being watched.

If they hadn’t left the house, if they had gotten the call earlier about siblings, if many things. But they all plagued JJ. JJ and Alvez had still been the agents out on the street when Garcia had run the profile through database and had found John David Bates so it had been JJ and Alvez that had been first on the scene when they found Bates’s car. They had found it parked near a building on fire and they hadn’t bothered to wait for help before rushing in. So they realized that the siblings had been chained to beds inside and that they needed something strong to cut the chains.

However, Alvez who ran back out had actually run into John who wanted to stop him. Bates being a man that repaired home with fire damage and who had tried more than once to set his older sister on fire had proved that he wasn’t going to let anything get in the way of his revenge high though Alvez was able to get the better of him even if it did slow him down. So when he ran back inside, JJ told him to get Roberto first and she was going to later get Francesca, but the fire had been too much and Alvez ended up pulling her out of there because they couldn’t wait a moment longer in the building.

So JJ blamed herself for Francesca’s death because she had chosen to save Roberto seeing as he reminded of her own son however Will told her that the only one to blame for the teenager’s death was the monster that kidnapped her.

THE END!
