Can Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson careers recover after being named worst actors for the year fpr Fifty Shades of Grey? The pair individually won Worst Actor and Worst Actress at the February 27 presentation of The Golden Raspberry (Razzies) Awards.
They got the unwanted awards for their roles as Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey in the February 2015 movie Fifty Shades of Grey. If that wasn’t sufficiently demeaning, the pair also won Worst Screen Combo. How badly will these un-coveted awards affect their already slow careers?
E! News reports that Fifty Shades of Grey, the film adaptation of book by E. L. James, certainly impressed those who voted for winners of the Razzies. And in a most unwelcomed way. Enough so that the movie earned Worst Screenplay and shared title of Worst Picture along with Fantastic Four. The irony of it all is that Fifty Shades of Grey was a highly anticipated production with a big budget and was actually a success at the box office when released February 2015.
E. L. James’ book is a 2011 erotic novel and is the first in the trilogy depicting the relationship of college literature student Anastasia Steel and multi-billionaire Christian Grey. The work is widely known for its explicit scenes and it was expected that this explosive work would translate into a masterpiece for the big screen.
Yet, those who voted for the Razzies clearly thought differently as the movie was anything but the highly erotic drama it was postured to be. There is no disputing that the Razzies were determined in their efforts to take down any achievements gained by Fifty Shades of Grey or its leading stars. In total, the actors and the movie earned a devastating five of the unwanted prizes!
In a March 2015 Vanity Fair article Dornan dismissed criticisms that he and Johnson had little or no chemistry and that this was the main reason the movie did not receive better reviews. The Razzie awards clearly show that some people beg to differ Jamie!
So is there does Jamie Dornan refuse to admit that the less than positive reviews by movie critics for Fifty Shades of Grey will follow the model turned actor? Is there another reason movie directors are not bursting the doors to offer Dornan fabulous roles? I
n fact, he has not been in movie role since the erotic thriller came out. Furthermore, the next movie the actor is supposedly booked for part 2 of the Fifty Shades trilogy. So is this the height of Dornan’s career?
Dakota Johnson has had better luck since Fifty Shades of Grey landing challenging roles in films such as Black Mass and A Bigger Splash in 2015. Johnson has clearly realized that after the poor reviews she received as Anastasia she has better expand her repertoire and has done such by doing comedies such as “How to be Single” released in 2016.
Unfortunately, based on the poor reviews, Johnson better not expect this to be a movie for which she will get any grand awards.
Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson might have expected this movie to be the pinnacle from which their careers took off. Sad to say, it really has not been. As it was, the Razzies show that they expect the pair to gain nothing but mediocre roles after the reviews they received from their respective roles. Nonetheless, the results of this year’s Razzies will certainly not prevent Jamie or Dakota from becoming Oscar nominees in the future.
