Tonight on the CW The Vampire Diaries starring Nina Dobrev, Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley continues with an all new Friday February 5, season 7 episode 11 called “Things We Lost in the Fire,” and we have your weekly recap and spoilers below. On tonight’s episode, Stefan (Paul Wesley) tries to help Damon (Ian Somerhalder) regain his grip on reality, while secretly struggling with his own experience in the Phoenix stone.
On the last episode, after finding himself on the wrong end of Julian’s (guest star Todd Lasance) planned to avenge Lily’s (guest star Annie Wersching) death, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) awakened to find himself trapped inside the Phoenix stone, tormented by a traumatic experience from his time in the Civil War and forced to face his darkest demon in order to get out.
On the outside, Bonnie (Kat Graham) was in a race against the clock to get Damon out before the effects of the Phoenix Stone took over and left him changed forever. Did you watch the last episode? If you missed it, we recapped it all right here for you.
On tonight’s episode as per the CW synopsis, “Stefan tries to help Damon regain his grip on reality, while secretly struggling with his own experience in the Phoenix stone. Meanwhile, Julian and his men take over Mystic Falls, which causes Matt to spiral out of control; Tyler returns to town for Alaric’s baby shower; and Caroline makes an upsetting discovery involving Alaric and his future plan for the babies.”

#VampireDiaries starts with Damon looking at the bloodshed around him in horror. He says no and wonders why he’s still there. He tries to wake up Matt then feeds him some blood. Next he runs to Bonnie and feeds her blood too and says he’s sorry.
Both of them choke back to life. Damon says he didn’t know where he was. Caroline is there and stabs Damon to take him out. Damon wakes again and sees he’s chained to the wall. He says he saw this coming.
Stefan has a nightmare and wakes. He goes to see chained up Damon and asks why they didn’t vervain him. Stefan says he just wanted to calm him down. Damon says he killed them all because he still thought he was in the fake hell world.
Stefan says it was an honest mistake, so he gets a pass. Damon says why is Stefan skipping the judgy phase. Stefan says they all understand, and Damon says he just stabbed his pregnant GF in the chest, but Stefan says the hell stone does a number on you.
Damon says he’s back, and it’s real, and he wants a bro hug. He asks him to unchain him, but Stefan says hell messes with you and post-hell is much worse. Tyler shows up and is stunned to see Damon chained to his wall.
He says Caroline invited him to the baby shower but didn’t mention that Mystic Falls fell apart. Damon asks what Stefan means when he says he was just gone for a weekend. Stefan says he’s been gone for weeks.
Julian has turned Mystic Falls into a hell hole vampire haven. We see drag racing in the middle of the main street in town. Matt and Bonnie are at the town line, and Matt throws out a spiked chain across the road.
Bonnie says her dating website just matched them, and they need to rethink things. She says maybe do a profile pic without the gun next time. The two cars race down the road and then it the chain and have blowouts.
Matt goes with his gun and Bonnie with her magic. She knocks them down with a spell, and Matt shoots them. Matt stomps one down and says, at least Lily kept her heretics on a leash. They get rid of the bodies.
Damon is stunned to hear that he’s had Matt and Bonnie patrolling Mystic Falls, and Stefan says he has no idea what he’s been through. Stefan says Bonnie pulled him out of the stone, and he tried to make life normal again.
We see him out to dinner with Caroline at a fancy place. He seems distracted and Caroline asks if he’s okay. He insists he is. She tells him that Bonnie is close to pulling Damon out, but it’s like Caroline is talking through a tunnel.
He hallucinates Damon coming at Caroline and tackles him, but it’s just a waiter. Caroline pulls him off of the guy, and he apologizes. Damon says why he couldn’t hallucinate him as a manager. Damon says he has no desire to kill Caroline and says he won’t have a breakdown.
Stefan says he will unchain him, but he can’t leave his side til he’s convinced he’s fine. Stefan says they’re going to drive around Mystic Falls. Damon hears a voice then sees ghost Henry upstairs. Stefan unlocks him, and Damon looks around uncertainly.
Stefan asks if he’s ready and he insists he’s good. Caroline calls Stefan, who asks if he’s trying to avoid her baby shower. He says maybe the hell stone would be more fun. Caroline says Alaric needs this so he can prepare to be a single dad.
Stefan says he’s getting him a Baby Bjorn like she told him to. Damon whistles and makes a whip crack noise. They go inside the grill and see that it’s a dive now. Damon says this is why they should have pulled him out first.
Stefan says they tried then says Damon wasn’t ready and asks what he experienced. He says bloody Civil War and mom. Then he says he had to cry and tell mom he’s sorry then he got out. Damon is still seeing things.
Julian is there, and Damon calls this an infestation. Julian says he declared a truce with Stefan. Damon comes at him, and Stefan says show me you can play well with others. Julian says he won’t destroy the town and says it holds sentimental value since it was once Lily’s home.
Julian tells Damon the real works begin now that you’re out of the hell stone and tells them good luck. Henry is there behind Damon again, and Stefan asks what he’s looking at. Damon says there are too many pieces of vampire trash there.
Julian asks Stefan he can be Damon’s wing man when he’s still adjusting. Stefan says he’s handling it, and Julian says that’s what he thought when he first got out. Bonnie videos Matt, Tyler, and Alaric as they try to diaper dolls blindfolded.
Matt and Tyler beheaded their dolls and Alaric says they can never babysit. Caroline asks Alaric how he did that blindfolded, and he says he can dismantle a bomb blindfolded. He teases her for leaving stacks of parenting magazines in his office.
Caroline says she won’t be on call once the babies are out of her, and he says he doesn’t expect her to. Caroline gets a twinge and says A just kicked. He touches her belly and says his daughter is a ninja. B kicks next, and he’s surprised she can tell them apart.
Tyler does a shot and says he’s almost got his manhood back. He asks Matt why he bothers being on duty since the bad guys keep multiplying. Tyler says the place is a cesspool not worth dying over. Nora shows up, and Tyler checks her out.
Matt tells him she’s uninvited but turns out Bonnie did invite her. She has a gift but refers to the baby registry as a list of demands. Nora says she got tiny little socks that looked like sneakers. Bonnie says good and offers her a drink.
She tells her the drinks are in baby bottles and says infants drinking is a lovely image. Damon goes out of the bar, and Henry lurks there asking if he’s surrendering his town to the enemy. Damon calls him a hell world hangover.
Henry says his liberation isn’t done. Damon yanks out his heart then realizes it was the black vamp who had been sitting there drinking. Stefan comes out and looks pained. Damon says let’s skip the check and runs off.
Matt demands to know why Bonnie invited Nora. Bonnie says she is not Julian’s and helped them get Stefan out. Matt reads off a list of Nora’s sins, but she says it’s better to have a powerful heretic as a friend and not an enemy.
Nora says she’s going to go before Matt says something he shouldn’t and she makes him unable to talk again. Matt asks if she’s threatening him. She says this is a threat and hurts him with magic. Bonnie asks her to stop, and she does then walks off. Matt follows.
Stefan asks Damon why he didn’t tell him he’s losing it then asks Stefan what happened. Stefan tells Damon he saw him everywhere. Stefan says he couldn’t eat or sleep, but Caroline was there for him through all the nightmares.
Stefan tells Caroline he was drowning in the quarry, and she asks what else but he wouldn’t tell her. Caroline says the rock is still torturing him. Damon is there and says he’s lucky he has her. Stefan says – you’re not here, and Caroline says who are you talking to?
Damon threatens to rip the babies out of her and Stefan freaks. Caroline tells him it’s not real but then tells Damon he pushed her away too. He says he didn’t even notice Julian taking over. We see bikers and morons.
Stefan says all he could see was Damon and then Stefan asking why he’s still there. Imaginary Damon says when you figure out the stone puzzle, I’ll be gone. Stefan says nothing else married but dealing with it.
He says all he cared about was making Damon go away. Damon asks what he did. Stefan says he got a can of gasoline and thought he needed to burn his body so he couldn’t haunt him. Caroline stopped him before he burned Damon.
Stefan says – I don’t want him to ever come back – I have to get rid of him. Caroline says no, you love your brother, and you would rather die than let him go. Stefan stopped. Now he tells Damon that he would have burned him if Caroline hadn’t stopped him.
Damon says that explains why he smelled like gas when he woke up. Someone creeps up and breaks the windows of the car as they sit there.
Stefan comes to and sees the smashed window. Damon is there and he asks if he’s okay. Damon says he’s not the one he should be worried about. He tells Damon he should have left him at the grill to deal with his consequences.
Damon tells him quit trying to save him. Julian drags Stefan out of the car and Stefan says Damon didn’t know what he was doing and he can get him under control. Julian says he was alone and was talking to himself.
He tells Stefan the stone may not be done with him yet. Julian says if one of them hurts another of his guys, he will gut one of them and feed the other the entrails. Tyler is on campus when Damon waves him over.
He thanks him for leaving the shower and Tyler asks what he wants. He says he wants to see Elena for a few minutes. Tyler says no and says he told him when he gave her the body, he can’t let him access her.
Tyler says he knows he’s sick and what he did the other night. Damon threatens to turn the baby shower into a blood bath if he doesn’t take him to see his girl. Damon says it’s just a little visit. Matt gets a text and looks down.
He almost runs into an oncoming car. A cop car pulls him over. He curses. Matt rolls down his window and sees a female cop. He shows her his badge, and she says the good news is he has a valid license, so he learned to drive.
She says he must be drunk, and he says he’s not. She tells him to step out of the car. She opens the door, and he gets out. Tyler takes Damon to a shipping yard in Greensboro, North Carolina. Damon doesn’t like the lack of security.
Tyler opens a shopping crate and says as long as no one knows where they are, no security is needed. Damon wheels her coffin out, and Tyler backs out of the way. Tyler grabs something. Damon opens the coffin and sees Henry.
Tyler shoots him, but it’s not good enough. Damon comes at him and bashes in his head. Caroline sees Stefan, and he’s in a panic over Damon. She tells him to calm down, and he says it’s happening again.
He says he’s seeing Damon hallucinations. Caroline says he’s okay, but he says he’s not and neither is Damon. Henry is in the coffin staring at him. He says he can’t go because Damon hasn’t let go of what’s holding him back.
Henry says the stone doesn’t trap you, it frees you to be reborn as your true self. Caroline tells Stefan he needs to take care of himself first. Caroline says something happened in the hell world he won’t admit. He says they can’t do anything about it now.
Caroline says tell me and says he has to try. Stefan says he lived in a loop of misery. He says every loop ended with Damon dragging him into the cold black water of the quarry. He says they were drowning together, and Damon kept dragging him down.
He says when he tried to save Damon, he died too. He says he realized he had to go on without Damon, so he let him go. Then we see him come up out of the water. Stefan says he abandoned him and let him drown so he could save himself.
Stefan says the hell stone is trying to prove a point and tell him something – he will never be happy until Damon is out of his life for good. Caroline asks if he really thinks that. Damon is ready to burn Henry’s body.
Henry stands there, and Damon is stunned. He tells him Elena held him back from being the monster he really is. Damon runs for the coffin and says no. We see Elena burning, and Damon is horrified.
Bonnie comes and finds Nora, and she asks Bonnie if she sent her a letter with a red x on it and says it’s a warning from the huntress. She says the sword is her weapon. She says once you’re marked with the sword, she won’t stop.
She says she took Beau’s throat and says she’s only after them. Bonnie worries she’ll also come for Damon and Stefan and says she must do something. Nora asks what they can do. Matt is cleared to go, and the lady cop says he can’t drive himself.
She asks if he has a friend to call and he says he’s light in the friends department. She says she heard about his graduating class dying off like that. She wonders why the town people didn’t bring in FEMA. She says it’s like everyone’s letting things happen.
She says there won’t be a town left. She tells him good night then comes back and says what the hell is this and tosses down his bag of vamp killing gear. Caroline opens baby presents and then looks at a letter from SMU on the desk.
It’s a letter about a new job for Alaric. She’s upset and then tells him she needs to wash some of the new clothes. She babbles strangely, and he asks what’s going on. She shows him the letter. She asks when he was going to tell her he’s leaving.
He says he wasn’t going to tell her until he got the offer. He says he’s not raising his kids near Mystic Falls, Whitmore or vampires. He says he’s sorry then says he thought all this was about preparing him to be a single parent.
She says it was, and he says he thought she wasn’t going to be involved after the babies were born. Caroline is teary but says she won’t because they’re his babies with Jo. She says he and his babies should get far away from here.
Damon sits staring at the fire, and Stefan comes in asks where he was. He says he had to go clear his head. Stefan tells him he let him go in his hell when they were drowning. He says he had to turn his back on him.
Stefan says the hallucinations were to remind him of that. Damon says the only way for him to be a hero is to leave him behind. Damon says his true self is dark, and all that light gets in the way. He says Stefan is keeping him from being what he is.
Stefan says what – reckless, selfish, manipulative. Damon says yep. Stefan says he’s his brother, and he’s not going to give up on him now or ever. He tells Damon he’s stuck with him forever. Damon sighs and starts to say something then stops.
Instead, he says they’re out of bourbon. He won’t say anything else about what he’s done. He toasts Stefan and says – here’s to drowning together. Three years from now, Caroline is on the news broadcasting a message to Stefan.
Caroline is tied up in an equipment box. Matt holds a gun on her and says get up. She thanks him. He says you can go now then says you did what we needed. He’s working with her. He says her problems mean nothing to him.
Matt says get out of sight and stay there until the huntress gets what she wants. Caroline is stunned as he says he had a GF and a life, and now it’s all gone. He walks away looking disgusted.
