‘The Young and the Restless’ Spoilers: Dylan McAvoy Wanted Dead or Alive?

'The Young and the Restless' Spoilers: Dylan McAvoy Wanted Dead or Alive?

The Young and the Restless spoilers tease that there’s dissension among the audience. Some want to see the character Steve Burton plays (Dylan) killed off. Others want him to remain alive and have an actor be recast in that part. What makes most sense for him and for the other fictional personalities who are connected to him?

Burton announced his voluntary departure from Y&R in the fall. He recently filmed his last scenes, which will appear on HD screens in January. So will Dylan be killed off, be written out of town indefinitely or remain in Genoa City where he’ll be played by another actor?

Sally Sussman seems to be pushing the show in a more realistic direction. That could mean that Dylan will perish while working on his upcoming undercover operation that Paul (Doug Davidson) recently referenced. The nature of this father and son’s vocation does lend itself to situations where bad guys and gals sometimes triumph, at least temporarily. It would also be believable to think that Dylan chooses to leave town due to all that’s transpired recently.

Killing Dylan off wouldn’t necessarily mean the end for Burton. He could always return some day as another character, or even a resurrected Dylan who somehow survived whatever happens to him. But those hypothetical points jump ahead of the immediate future for various connected characters.

Clearly Sharon (Sharon Case) and her children, Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) and other Newman family members, Paul and Ben (Sean Carrigan) would be deeply impacted by Dylan’s loss. Sharon would have no one left, except Mariah (Camryn Grimes), to lean on. So any choice to end this character’s life will have been deeply considered by Y&R’s back office contingent.

Writing Dylan out of town is somewhat of a compromise choice. An amiable, or angry break from Sharon would have occurred prior to said departure. Possibly, Dylan returns to Avery’s (Jessica Collins) life? She’s his original love of course.

The above decision would also leave the door open for Burton’s potential return someday. The actor hasn’t ruled out doing so, though he also didn’t directly addressing if he would, or when.

Recasting this character would likely mean that Shylan remains intact in the short-term. This duo is currently stuck in a holding pattern, circling the GC airport. Seasoned soap viewers who are aware of Burton’s status know that a post-Christian (Jude and Ozzy McGuigen) plot generally wouldn’t have been followed by Dylan growing closer to his wife, yet he has.

If a recast has taken place, or is being considered it’s currently under wraps. Kudos to Y&R in that instance, if that’s the case. But in any of the instances cited above Dylan’s coming fate will become a significant plot point.
