New information has been released on the sad and tragic deaths of pianist Vadym Kholodenko’s two young children – Nika (5 years old) and Michela (1 year old). On March 17, Vadym Kholodenko returned to his Texas home to find his two daughters dead, and the children’s mother Sofya Tsygankova covered in blood and incoherent. Later, Sofya Tsygankova was charged for murdering her children.

On Thursday, April 28 the local Texas coroner released an official statement on Nika and Michela’s cause of death. According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the medical examiner reported, “The mechanism of death in this case and the companion case is most likely asphyxia.”

The tragic story of Vadym Kholodenko’s children’s gruesome deaths made national headlines, and millions of people around the country have been following the story and clamoring for justice for Nika and Michela. According to Texas news reports, it is believed that Sofya Tsygankova was suffering from mental health disorders. She was on medication for both Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia.

The police have confirmed that Vadym Kholodenko’s daughters’ deaths were a result of “homicidal violence.” It is believed that Sofya Tsygankova smothered the children with pillows in their beds before she began harming herself. Sofya is currently being held in prison with a $2 Million dollar bail.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Vadym Kholodenko, he is an award winning musician and world-renowned pianist hailing from the Ukraine. Vadym and Sofya were married in 2010; however, they divorced in 2015 and have since been estranged. Vadym Kholodenko released a statement on his children’s deaths stating, “The loss of my children will be with me forever. Wherever I go after this tragedy, my heart will stay with all the people here of Fort Worth and my daughters will rest in this soil.”
