Tonight’s episode of Vinyl kicks off where we left off last week – Richie is still a hot mess, and has snorted enough cocaine to get a small village high. Apparently he made it out of the building collapse in one piece. The ceo of American Century Records is at a movie theater – high as a kite, and standing in front of the screen and trying to emulate Bruce Lee. Annoyed movie theater attendees shout at him to get out of the way, finally an employee at the theater chases him out.

Richie is supposed to be at the label – hammering out a deal with Polygram (the conglomerate that is purchasing the label). Zakovich lies and tells them that Richie is running a little late. Zak calls Richie’s wife, who is at home with the kids, trying to hide from them the fact that their dad went on a bender and destroyed the house. Richie’s wife Devon has no idea where he is now.

Richie finally shows up at American Century Records, and he is totally out of it, and covered in dirt from the building collapse the night before. Richie announces that the deal is over – he won’t sign the contracts. Apparently, on his bender and after his near death experience he came to the conclusion that they had to get back to the basics and that would save the entire label. Polygram is obviously not impressed.

Devon takes the kids out to breakfast and goes to the bathroom and zones out – she has a flashback to the first time she and Richie met, and has sex in the bathroom at a club. Devon is so out of it that she leaves the restaurant and drives off, forgetting her kids. Eventually she realizes that her car is a bit emptier than it should be and she rushes back to the restaurant. The kids are waiting for her in the parking lot with one of the restaurant’s employees – who lets Devon know that she is a pretty crappy mom.

Meanwhile back at the record label, Richie is turning the office in to an episode of “The Apprentice.” He fires his entire staff – and then turns it in to a contest. Richie announces that if they can score new talent in two weeks, they can have their job back … but it has to be something new and groundbreaking. Jamie Vine remembers the guy Kip that she met and his band Nasty Bits – Richie still isn’t interested. But, Jamie manages to bribe him to check out the band with some coke. Richie tells Jamie that she and Julian can put on a showcase for the band so that he can hear them play.

Devon is back at her destroyed apartment, and taking pictures of the damage that Richie did. She gets a phone call from the police saying that Richie’s car was impounded near the collapsed building – Devon freaks out and thinks that he died in the collapse and that is why no one has heard from him, she rushes over to his house to see if he is there.

Julian and Jamie are working on the showcase with the Nasty Bits – Julian says that they are horrible. He shouts at Kip and his bandmates that their music sounds like “5 dogs with their c—ks stuck in a lawnmower.” He sends Jamie off on a coffee run since she clearly isn’t A&R rep material. Julian informs the band that the only way they can play in the showcase is if they play a song by the Kinks.

Meanwhile, Zak’s life sucks. Richie shut down the Polygram deal and money is tight. He can’t afford to pay for his daughter’s over-the-top Bat Mitzvah. Plus, his nose is broken and he has to deal with the fact that he can’t breathe out of his nose – and his wife spends the entire night lecturing him about their insurance. Zak has a meltdown of his own and goes outside to sit in his car in the middle of the night.

Devon rushes over to Richie’s apartment – he’s in the shower, and still very much alive. She asks him about his relapse and recent bender. While they are arguing there is a knock at the door. It’s a detective – he wants to talk to Richie about the murder of someone named Jimmy Porter. Richie is obviously panicking and thinks that they are there about Buck. Richie says he doesn’t know anything, after the detective leaves, Richie bursts in to tears and sobs to Devon about how horrible of a person he is. Devon starts kissing him – and clearly wants to head to the bedroom. Richie brushes her aside and says he is too tired. Devon has another flashback to her and Richie when they first me – they were clearly much happier than they are now, and very much in love.

Tonight’s episode ends with Richie showing up at the door of his old pal Lester – he says that they need to talk.

THE END!
