#WaywardPines starts with Xander waking to water dripping on his forehead. He’s down in a hole and sees daylight up above. He sits up and then stands to look. It’s like he’s been dropped down a well. He calls out for Ben then begins to climb his way up.

An Abbie growls at him and he drops back into the hole. The Abby jumps in after him and they fight. Xander gets it into a choke hold. It growls and goes limp. Xander grabs up a rock and bashes its head in with a squish.

Xander climbs up out of the well and collapses on the ground. Theo comes out of his house for a run and hears the morning announcement on the PA that tells them to live a normal life. Megan reports on pregnancies to Jason and Kerry.

She promises an update on the lab research later this week. Kerry asks her to have Theo help and Megan disagrees but Kerry pushes on the point and has to cave. Kerry says they need to get Theo to try and speed up the resident training.

CJ is annoyed and thought this meeting was about crops. He says nothing matters if they can’t eat. Jason asks him to stay. CJ says the food supply must grow and need to find new sites. He says they need soil studies, irrigation, and other efforts.

CJ says with the Abbies retreated, we can work without fear. Kerry says they could come back. Megan says it sounds ambitious. Jason takes CJ’s side. Megan plays the Pilcher card but Jason says Pilcher would want us to survive and be bold.

He asks Megan how can she be against securing food. Jason endorses CJ’s plan but says he gets Megan’s concerns but says they have to do it. Xander is at a creek and scoops up some water. He’s being watched. He sits and rests.

Adam Hassler is there and grabs him and holds a knife to his throat. He asks if Xander is a nomad and if Pilcher sent him. Xander tells him Pilcher is dead. He lets Xander go and asks if Pam is in charge. Xander says Pam killed Pilcher and went missing.

He says a kid is in charge named Jason. He asks where they are and Xander tells him he woke up in a pit. Hassler says the Abbies do a lot of things. He’s surprised to learn Pilcher sent a lot of them out there looking for survivors.

Hassler says all he found was Xander who keeps following him. Rebecca is at her salon and sees Lucy frisking out because she got her period. Lucy is scared and asks how old she was when she was paired up and Rebecca says it was different back then.

Rebecca says she will like one of the boys they offer but Lucy says she can’t be a mom and begs her not to make her go back. Rebecca says she has to or they’ll figure it out. She hugs the girl. Xander and Hassler sit at a fire talking.

Hassler says the Abbies send a scout and if you can catch him, you can get away. He says there’s a method to the Abbies but you have to survive long enough to learn it. Xander says he’s group B and woke up five years ago.

Hassler asks why he’s out there and he says he colored outside the lines. Hassler says it’s a harsh punishment and he agrees. Hassler says he’s going home to see someone. He says they might put Xander back out there.

The guards are playing guards when they hear a proximity alarm. Mario says let’s get to the fence. They see two incoming. They open the gate for Xander and Hassler. Hassler walks past them without blinking.

Theo does a check-up on Hassler – they make introductions since they don’t know each other. Theo asks why he went out there and how far he got. Theo asks if they’re alone. Hassler doesn’t answer. Then he says they’re not our enemies, they’re our replacements.

Theo asks what that means. Hassler grunts and lies back. Theo pulls up his shirt and sees scars on his abdomen. Jason asks Theo how Hassler is doing and he refuses to break confidentiality. Jason says this is a different time.

Jason wants to know if Hassler is mentally stable. Jason says Hassler is a hero – the only Nomad who ever returned and it’s big news for Wayward Pines. Theo tells him to go ask Hassler. Jason says you only care for people when they’re sick.

Jason says the people are his responsibility all the time and Theo asks what about Pam and says he knows she’s dead. Jason insists he loses sleep over protecting these people and scoffs at Theo’s attitude. Hassler wakes from a nightmare about stabbing an Abby.

He pulls his jacket on and groans. He sees an Abby at his hospital room door – he’s hallucinating. He shakes it off but is freaked out. Arlene goes running after him and says she got him a haircut appointment and a mani pedi. He staggers away.

Some kids are doing a play about the First Generation and Pilcher’s face is hanging above them on stage like an icon. The kids sing about not discussing the past. Lucy is upset as she watches. She gets up and runs out of the auditorium.

She’s outside against a wall hiding. Megan rolls up on her and asks if she’s all right. She asks about her extra bathroom breaks. Lucy says it’s something she ate and Megan acts like she believes her. A guy asks what’s wrong after Megan leaves.

Lucy says she thinks Megan knows but he says he won’t say anything. Hassler staggers down Main Street and everyone stares. He’s having Abby flashbacks. Theresa sees him and follows him down an alley. She says his name and he stares.

He asks where’s Ethan and she says gone. She says they also put Ben outside the fence then asks if he saw her son. Hassler says he didn’t see him. She curses him for sending Ethan there. She says Hassler knew all along and was working with Pilcher.

She says her family is all gone because of him and because they trusted him. She walks away in disgust. Kerry studies Xander’s file then goes to see him – he’s at the ice cream parlor.

She says the kids will be excited he’s back and asks what’s the flavor of the day – he says corn. She says Hassler won’t talk and Jason is still deciding his fate.

She says Jason knows he was stealing weapons for the rebels and says his survival made him a bit of a hero. Xander says he won’t make trouble and makes a joke. Kerry says this is his second chance for the 10th time.

She asks how he made it out there and if Hassler helped him. Xander says he’s the one who helped Hassler. He says the Abbies aren’t just dumb animals and says there’s a method to them if you can survive long enough to learn it.

He repeats Hasslers words then lies and says he can even talk to Hassler for them since they bonded. He’s trying to keep himself safe. Hassler sits boozing on a bunch. A kid eats an ice cream cone and watches him. There an Abby that attacks the kid – he’s hallucinating again.

Adam drops the bottle and runs off. Theresa watches him from across the street. Theo tells Rebecca what Adam said about them being their replacement. Theo says now they’re sending people outside the fence. She wants him to tell Jason.

He says he won’t put Jason’s fate in his hands and she says it’s not just his. Frank meets with Megan and Lucy’s brother is uncomfortable. She says she wanted to remind him of Pilcher’s greatest gift to them – life. She says life is precious and each must contribute.

Megan says there can’t be secrets among the First Gen or her. Frank asks if she wants him to rat people out. She says it’s being honest and she doesn’t like the word. She asks him to help her with Lucy. He says she’s not ready and he has to protect her.

Megan says she’s blooming and becoming a woman should be celebrated. She says they encourage a natural way to live and she can serve a higher purpose. Megan takes his hand. She says she knows he wants what’s best for his sister.

Then Megan says they need to do what’s best for Wayward Pines. Theo is with CJ at the greenhouses and CJ says he doesn’t know how long they will be gone. Theo says the Abbies have problem solving capabilities and CJ is underestimating them.

He talks about them building ladder with their bodies and sacrificing some to achieve the goal. CJ scoffs since Theo hasn’t been there long. CJ says this is not about water or corn but the people they leave behind – the ones that can’t come with them.

CJ says they offer them hope. Rebecca and Lucy watch a line of vehicles leaving to go explore outside the fence. Xander watches too and waves his hand to wave at Rebecca.

Theresa stops CJ’s trucks and asks to come along. She says she wants to find her son. He asks what about Adam Hassle and she says he’s not my problem. She gets in the vehicle and they go.

The gate opens and the line of vehicles rolls out into Abby territory. Rebecca comes to the ice cream shop and asks if Xander is okay. He says he’s still there and says I see your husband is awake.  She asks if Jason is leaving him alone and he says he offered info about the Abbies and has to come up with something. He says he’s trying to stay alive and she agrees.

She asks if Jason is leaving him alone and he says he offered info about the Abbies and has to come up with something. He says he’s trying to stay alive and she agrees. Xander offers her licorice and says he’s thinking of calling them Wayward Vines.

Rebecca finds Megan in the shop with Lucy. Megan says Lucy needs to come with her and meet her obligations. Rebecca asks her to step outside. Megan says they all have the duty to spread the human race and says Rebecca failed in this.

Rebecca says you can preserve humanity and be humane at the same time. Rebecca says this is primitive to make children have children. Megan says Lucy has no choice and Rebecca says she won’t let her hurt Lucy.

Megan says she’ll see Jason in 30 minutes and will report her. Rebecca says report what – that she needs to be reckoned or reined in. She rolls Megan out of her shop and asks if she wants to pick that fight.

Megan tells her she’s being self-destructive. Rebecca tells Lucy to come back inside and says she can spend the night with her tonight. CJ and Theresa are with the others outside the walls. CJ says our world is still beautiful.

They make camp. Theresa goes poking around and goes over to Adam. She asks why he came back and if he’s trying to help her. He says yes. Theresa says the harvesters saw Ben. CJ builds a large fire. CJ talks to Adam who walks away from him abruptly.

Adam goes into the woods and looks around. Theresa hears the men talking and wakes. She comes out of her tent and listens. She goes to look at the body on the ground. She uncovers it and starts crying. She stares at Adam with hate.

Rebecca introduces Lucy to Theo and sends the girl upstairs. He asks where are her parents – she says they died on Invasion Day and lives with other orphans. She tells him that Lucy got her period a ew days ago and they want her in the fertility program.

Theo is stunned since the kid is 11. He asks if they inseminate the girls but she says they pair them up and put them in procreation rooms and do things the old fashioned way. He says old fashioned is a six pack and the back seat of a car, not kids.

Theo asks who pairs them and she says she doesn’t know but it’s not one person. He says it’s eugenics and she knows it. Rebecca agrees and says she’s trying to protect Lucy and that’s why she brought her home.

Theo says CJ told him they’re going outside to give them hope not food. Theo says when one thing here seems rational, two more things pop up that are crazy. He says this is not living, it’s survival. Next day, Lucy is at school and Frank approaches her.

She says she knows he told Megan and says she hates him. She walks off. Frank sits alone watching other kids play basketball. Later, he mopes in the dorms of the orphanage. He puts on a hoodie and goes outside and walks down the street.

Frank sits on a bench and pulls out a sandwich. The carousel lights up and starts spinning nearby. He looks over at it then goes to look. Abruptly the power goes out, it darkens and slows to a stop. There’s an Abby in town.

 THE END!
