When Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt broke up, it sent a shudder through the world as we know it. Our golden celebrity couple Brangelina – the last remaining movie stars – the two people everyone thought would stay together – broke up. However, it wasn’t so much that they broke up but the way in which it happened that seemed to shock people.
This wasn’t a typical breakup, and it wasn’t even a typical conscious uncoupling, coined by Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin (and then later commandeered by Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner). This was an ugly, drawn out, acrimonious divorce between two people who seemed like they were head over heels for each other just a few months prior. I mean, they’d lasted more than a decade and had been married for two years – who actually thought they would get divorced? I was giving them at LEAST another decade.
Unfortunately, the world doesn’t work according to reason or common sense. Brad and Angelina did end up getting divorced, and it was for reasons no one thought likely – allegations over a physical altercation and Brad Pitt’s alleged substance abuse issues. Something happened on a private jet when the whole family was traveling back to the US, and that something caused Angelina Jolie to pack her bags, grab her children, and file for divorce the very next day.
However – and this is a big however – after several months of passive aggressive media smears against each other (and counseling sessions between Brad and the children), Angelina hinted at a more conciliatory tone in her first interview since the divorce filing. She told both BBC and GMA that she and Brad will ‘always’ remain a family, no matter what.
And that is a far cry from what ‘sources’ have been telling tabloids, which leads me to one of two conclusions: either she’s lying to preserve her reputation as queen mother of humanitarians (very possibly) or she and Brad have sorted out their differences and are now on better terms.
However, if it is the second option, that also leaves the door open for a reconciliation on more than one level. Is it possible that Brangelina could get back together? The scars from this fight will run deep, but as we’ve seen, couples have come back from worse precipices.
