Bajie had betrayed Sunny because he thought that he could get something out of it. But the Engineer had had something else in mind for Bajie because he hated rats just as much as the next guy. So Bajie found himself still chained to Sunny when Sunny was put in the pit. The pit was the fighting arena that gave everyone a little chance of entertainment after a hard day of work however the fighting was to the death and Sunny didn’t want to do that anymore. Sunny was done with killing for others and that all he wanted to do was keep his head down.

However, the Engineer considered Sunny to be his property and so hadn’t cared what Sunny wanted. He knew that Sunny would have to choose between life and death and he had put his money on Sunny wanting to live. So adding Bajie had simply been amusing for the Engineer. He had wanted to see what Sunny could do with a hindrance and he had been surprised when Sunny and Bajie had later put their differences behind them just to make it out of the pit because the Engineer didn’t think they would try to escape.

Sunny and Bajie had fought together and they had gone up the only steps they saw that led to the aboveground. Yet, getting out of the pit and away from the Engineer did mean they had to kill someone. They had been forced to kill their opponent in the arena because he hadn’t wanted the games to end though they had only killed as last resort and the guys had made their escape before they had been caught by anyone else. So Sunny and Bajie were later out in the wilds so to speak because they had to travel the lands that weren’t ruled by Kings, Barons, or even Engineers.

So the two were eventually forced to rely on their wits and Sunny didn’t always agree with what Bajie came up. For example, Bajie knew that they had to eat more than just grass and so he had used his keen hunting skills leftover from the mines to hunt out underground mole rats. Though the creatures looked disgusting and so Sunny didn’t want to eat them. He thought that they could find something else down the line and that they weren’t that desperate, but it turns out that there weren’t a lot of rabbits or deer just lying around.

Survival therefore meant doing what they had to. Even Lydia learned that lesson because she had gone to see her son when her father’s church had needed Ryder’s help. Ryder was the baron now after all and so he could offer his grandfather’s church the same protection that Quinn once had. But Lydia had gotten cocky. She had tried to tell her son that he needed her help with the cogs that were running away to join the widow and she had gone too far when she said that she could help act as a baron because as far as he was concerned he was already a baron.

Ryder had reminded his mother that she had been the arrogant one that didn’t believe he would last a month without her. However, he had wanted to teach her a lesson for underestimating him and so he refused her request. Ryder said now he’ll see if she or the church will survive without his protection and then he threw her out of his house. So Lydia didn’t win anything by trying to talk to her son as if he was still a boy. And instead she might have made things even worse because now Ryder will purposely go out of his way to ensure that she learn her lesson.

Yet, Ryder did become concerned that people near and far were beginning to hear rumors. So he called a conclave. A conclave was a meeting with all the barons and in this case Ryder had wanted to reaffirm the boundaries to his massive territory in order to make the Widow look like a usurper. He could say that she was illegally occupying his lands and that would mean every clipper in the Badlands would suddenly be out for her blood though the Widow had found out about the conclave in advance and she had been advised to attend.

Waldo had told the Widow that she should push her own claim to the oil fields and that the conclave would be the best place for it because the barons didn’t want a war. Though he also mentioned that if things didn’t go their way, they could just kill everyone at the conclave. So the Widow and Waldo were making plans for everything, but Tilda wasn’t included. Waldo had apparently found out what she did with those clippers and had said that she was too emotional to make a good Regent. And so he had warned her about turning those feelings off.

He said that’s how Sunny lost it all. But Sunny was trying to make his way back into the Badlands and he had even accepted Bajie’s help because Bajie was the only one that knew how to get pass a hundred foot tall border wall. So there was no counting Sunny out just yet! He was determined and in the meantime both Veil and the baby were safe under the not-so-dead Quinn’s protection. And while Tilda might be thought weak because of her emotions, she wasn’t the only one that was concerned about what happened to M.K.

THE END!
