The Met Gala is usually celebrated as one of fashion’s biggest nights. Every year Hollywood’s biggest celebrities and the designers who dress them swarm New York City to attend the charity event, and pay thousands of dollars a ticket to dress in an elaborate fashion. The money raised every year goes to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. So why was this year’s Met Gala considered a dud?
Even though this year’s event did feature a ton of famous faces including Jennifer Lopez, Alex Rodriguez, Madonna, Celine Dion, Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen, and Katy Perry, many complained that the biggest stars such as Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, and fashion icon Sarah Jessica Parker were noticeably absent.
Some have complained that the Met Gala lost it’s prestige when Anna Wintor, Vogue’s editor-in-chief, and chair woman of the Gala started allowing the Kardashians and Jenners attend the event. Kim was famously banned from the event for years, but once she and Kanye hooked up, Anna relented and has allowed Kim and her sisters to appear for the past few years.
It also seems as though this year’s attendees barely spoke to anyone outside of their group. The Met Gala is supposed to be an occasion where diverse celebs are all gathered together in one room and meet, mingle, and have fun. But, apparently that didn’t happen this year.
Usually the hottest musical guests are asked to provide entertainment at the Gala, but this year’s entertainer, Katy Perry failed to get guests on their feet. Katy performed her latest singles, both of which have underwhelmed on the charts and a video of an unimpressed Jennifer Lopez and Madonna watching Katy perform has gone viral.
Another complaint was the fashion. Every year has a theme and this year’s was ‘Comme des Garcons’ which was to pay tribute to designer Rei Kawakubo. Although some celebs like Rihanna were praised for their bold fashion, most didn’t follow the theme.
Katy Perry wore a bizarre ensemble and even though it followed the theme, she is being criticized because it was designed by John Galliano, who has made anti-Semitic comments in the past. However, the biggest grievance for many was that the fashion displayed was just boring.
