Tom Hiddleston could’ve been the next Hollywood leading man. He was compared to the likes of Benedict Cumberbatch. Heck, he was even in talks to become the next James Bond. Tom Hiddleston’s star has taken quite a hit since then. He’s become a tabloid topic and a bit of a joke. It looks like his career is in trouble. He may have trouble finding serious movie roles after his high-profile relationship with Taylor Swift.
He wasn’t always Hollywood’s top choice. Tom Hiddleston’s acting is merely up for debate. Most of his fans think he’s brilliant. Still, that hasn’t landed him many roles. For example, he scored a role on Crimson Peak shortly after Benedict Cumberbatch opted out. He also got the role for Only Lovers Left Alive after Michael Fassbender – another actor he’s been compared to – dropped out of the project.
Tom Hiddleston wasn’t even the first choice to play Loki in Thor. It sounds hard to believe, but Jim Carrey was the first actor considered for the role. Then Josh Harnett originally tested for the role before Tom Hiddleston ended up with it. While Loki is a hit among Marvel fans, it appears that Hiddleston has had a tough time finding roles outside the Marvel universe.
His relationship with Taylor Swift may have also ruined his career. Tom Hiddleston ruined his chances of being taken seriously in Hollywood when he dated the young pop star who’s notorious for writing breakup songs about her exes. Some called their relationship a publicity stunt.
Their three-month whirlwind romance involved them traveling around the world, meeting each other’s families, and partying at her Rhode Island mansion on the Fourth of July. That very day, Hiddleston wore a tank top that read “I [Heart] T.S.”
Taylor Swift was also mocked for moving on quickly after her one-year relationship with DJ Calvin Harris. She was also involved with a feud with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian around that time. By the time Swift and Hiddleston split in September, everyone breathed a collective sigh of relief. Then, there was Hiddleston’s infamous interview with GQ, in which he defended their relationship and that infamous tank top.
To add fuel to the first, the GQ author called him “uncool.” Tom Hiddleston tried to break the ice by cracking corny jokes. He also regretted what he said about Taylor Swift. So, he visited the writer’s hotel room in the early hours of the morning to retract his previous statements. Awkward.
Tom Hiddleston was also mocked for his 2017 Golden Globes speech. He gave a confusing and rambling speech about meeting with the nurses and doctors in Africa who watched The Night Manager. Hiddleston’s speech confused viewers and audience members. It also became a meme on the internet, prompting him to apologize the next day. Hiddleston is often known for his British charm, but he fell flat here.
Tom Hiddleston was filming Thor: Ragnarok last year. As of right now, he doesn’t have much going on. According to his IMDB page, he only has two films in the works, including Ragnarok.
