The Young and the Restless (Y&R) spoilers explore what Sally Sussman has to say about her introduction of the developing same-sex relationship between Mariah and Tessa. It looks like Mariah and Tess’ unexpected kiss is making waves, both on and off screen. In fact, former the Young and the Restless co-executive producer and head writer Sally Sussman has something to say about the show’s new direction.
Many The Young and the Restless fans were shocked to hear that both Sally and creative consultant Kay Alden are no longer with the show. It’s only been two short weeks since Sally’s departure, but it looks like their legacy including Mariah (Camyn Grimes) and Tess’ (Cait Fairbanks) steamy kiss is having a major impact.
Speaking to Daytime Confidential, Sally says that while some viewers will understand the history behind Mariah and Tessa’s relationship, others might not.
She told the site, “While starting to write the daily shows, I came up with several stories that I pitched the network; one of which is the love story between Mariah and a new character named Tessa. This is a love story; it’s not a gay story. It’s about falling in love with a person, not a gender. It is about Mariah and Tessa’s self-discovery and it catches them both off guard. People fall in love unexpectedly for all sorts of reasons. Some they understand; some they don’t.”
And as far as the disapproval of LGBT stories on daytime television by fans, Sally said, “I was honestly a little taken aback by the depth of the negativity. It made me quite sad. When I created Generations, my goal was to make the African-American families where you didn’t see race. I had hoped with this story people wouldn’t just see gender; they’d feel the honest love between the characters. I hope the audience watches as it plays out and doesn’t judge too quickly.”
What do you think about the introduction of a lesbian relationship on Y&R. Is Sussman being disingenuous here when she claims that her goal was merely to show love between two people, irrespective of gender – or was she really counting on the huge fan response to the gay aspect of the affair? However a Y&R fan might feel about Tessa and Mariah’s romantic relationship it would be absurd to think that Sussman didn’t anticipate the controversy.
