Jack the Ripper was a doctor. He was a man of science and believed in a healthy debate in the subject with his friends. But Dr. John Stevenson had known that his time was nearly up in his world. He had gone to a dinner party at H.G. Welles’s home not long after killing another poor prostitute and he had listened carefully as Welles told him about the time machine he had created. So John or better yet “Jack” had later used that same time machine to escape capture in the 1880s and he had almost gotten away free and clear however Welles followed him once he knew what his friend had done.

Welles had been a struggling writer when his friend Jack suddenly disappeared just as the police arrived at his door. However, he knew that something was wrong when he went into the basement and noticed that time machine had been used. So Welles chose to use the time machine for the first time in order to capture his former friend and he had been surprised to find himself in the twenty-first century yet Welles had also gotten lucky with where he landed. He and his time machine had been transported to him to a museum made in his honor and so he got to see a bit of his own future. And he even realized that he wasn’t such a failure that everyone thought.

Welles had gone on to find out that he did finish his time traveling book and that a lot had changed culturally. So Welles had thought that the utopia he had once dreamed about had finally come true. He saw that women were now in positions of power and that segregation was no longer a thing. Yet, Welles had gotten himself into trouble as well. He had gotten out of the time machine in the middle of a museum after all and so the assistant curator had had a few words for him. Jane Walker had said that he was like the other guy with the funny accents and weird clothes though she chose to let him off without calling the police.

Jane had been of the opinion that the museum shouldn’t call attention to what she thought was a mere stunt. So she decided to let Welles go with a warning. She warned him that if he ever came back to the museum that she would call the police and have him arrested. Though Welles didn’t mind being warned and or getting escorted to the door. He had simply been excited to see the future for himself and even finding Jack hadn’t been a problem for him because all Welles had to do was ask around for someone that acted just like he did, but Welles started to see more of the world as he was searching for Jack and he realized that not all changes had been good.

Welles had seen some TV footage as he was waiting for Jack at the hotel his friend had checked in and he had seen that the world hadn’t become an utopia. There were still wars, crime, and murders have only gotten worse since his own time because of high capacity weapons. But what truly broke Welles’s heart had been Jack. Jack had found him at the bar and he had laughed at Welles’s misguided notion that the world was only going to get better however Jack had also said that he wasn’t going to go back to their time and that he was going to stay in the future despite what Welles wanted. So Welles ended up having to run away after Jack tried to get the key to the time machine.

The key to the time machine was the only thing that made it work and so Jack wanted it because he didn’t want Welles tracking him down across time. However, Welles had surprised the other man when he chose to run rather than back down and so Jack had just been a little behind Welles when he ran out into the street yet doing that had saved the key. Welles had gotten hit by a taxi and the police had kept everyone else away while Welles was being transferred to the hospital. So Welles had gotten away and, even better, he had run into Jane again seeing as the hospital had called her when they found her card in Welles’s coat.

Yet, that hospital call had saved Jane the hassle of looking for Welles herself. She had apparently gotten in a lot of trouble with her boss for letting the two trespassers walk away even getting something as simple as their names. So Jane had gone to the hospital because she did want to get Welles’s name and have it confirmed that he pulled a prank though, luckily for her, Welles had no problem with lying because he wanted to find Jack as fast as possible and didn’t want anyone slowing him down. And so Welles confirmed what Jane wanted to hear. He told her that he was an actor playing “H.G. Welles” in a play and that scene at the museum had been a prank.

So Jane had felt better knowing that. She had thought Welles was cute and she hadn’t wanted him to be crazy, but Jane had also seen that Welles didn’t have anywhere to turn to and that he was going to need someone to take care of him. Though convincing him that he needed to take a break from finding his friend had been an uphill battle. She had told him that he wasn’t in any condition to look for anyone and that he needed to heal or risk injuring himself which was true and so Welles did see the light in the end. He had agreed to stay the night and, by the next morning, he was once again looking for Jack.

Jack however wasn’t actually hiding. He had killed again and it had been another young woman. But Jack had left the victim with keys in her mouth and he had killed her at a club called ‘Utopia’. So Jack had wanted Welles to find him because he had wanted the key and so Welles knew that Jack was going to keep on killing if he didn’t end this one way or another so he knew he was going to need help. Welles hadn’t been able to fight off Jack on his own the last time and if a car hadn’t hit him then Jack could have easily taken the key from him so he did need. And unfortunately, the only one he could depend on was Jane.

Jane was smart and she knew how to get around in this century. Yet, convincing Jane that he really was H.G. Welles required a demonstration. Welles had talked Jane into letting him back into the museum and there he had showed her that the time machine does work by taking them both three days into the future. So Jane had been shocked to find out that Welles was the man he said he was and that he could travel to the future though the two of them had also seen a newspapers while they were there and so they had seen that Jane becomes Jack’s third victim. And so they knew that they had to stop Jack’s latest killing spree in its tracks by rescuing the second victim.

Jack’s second victim had been listed in the newspaper and so the two had known that Kerry Ann Riley was also going to die at a nightclub. However, getting to her first and stopping Jack meant that Welles had to reconsider his principles because Welles didn’t believe in harming anyone much less someone that deserved it. So Jane had had to be the reasonable one. She had told him to take her gun and together the two had traveled to Kerry’s last whereabouts yet they had ended up walking in on Jack just as he was about to kill her so Jack had tried to use his victim as leverage. He told Welles that he would kill the girl if he didn’t get the key and so Welles pulled the gun.

Jack had been so shocked when his old cowardly friend pulled weapon on him, but he hadn’t known if Welles was bluffing or not so he did let Kerry go. Though Jack later saw that Welles wasn’t going to shoot him so he tackled Welles. Jack had wanted to overpower him in order to get the key and the only thing that had stopped him had been the help that Kerry had sent for. So Jack did make off before the cops came and he had stayed just far away to watch both Welles and Jane got back to her apartment. And so Jack later kidnapped Jane when Welles wasn’t looking and he had threatened to kill her if he didn’t get the key.

But Welles had found friends. Welles had run across Vanessa Anders and she claimed that she was his great-granddaughter. So Vanessa revealed to Welles that he had visited her once at college and had told her everything. Like how he was HG Welles and was looking for Jack the Ripper however Vanessa had told him that she wanted to help him with his mission and that she had resources he could use. And, well, it had all sounded a little too good to be true. Vanessa had said she was related and couldn’t prove it, she had said she wanted to help and her men more often than not got in the way, and at one point Welles had felt like he was a prisoner.

So Welles escaped Vanessa’s men that were following him and he went to the museum to see if he could find Jack there. However, Jack hadn’t showed up alone because he had brought Jane and had demanded the key in exchange for her life so Welles did hand over the key. He gave Jack what he needed and, after he got Jane back, he tried to stop the machine. Welles had pulled on every circuit he could to stop it and he hadn’t been sure if he got the job done until he opened the hatch and a very angry Jack came out.

Jack had tried to attack Welles when a security guard intervened. So Jack got away again yet he was far from done. He had later called Welles from Jane’s cell phone and he had said that he was going to kill someone everyday if he didn’t get what he wanted. However, Welles doesn’t know what he’ll do and in the meantime DNA results came back in proving that Vanessa truly was related to him. And so he allowed her to help him and Jane.

And while no one was looking, a mysterious stranger found out that Welles and Jack the Ripper actually traveled through time.

THE END!
