Via POLITICO Sir Paul McCartney took away the prize Wednesday night in a glitzy White House ceremony, but it was President Barack Obama who got applause from the pop music stars who performed. After receiving the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song from Obama, McCartney said: "Getting this prize would just be good enough, but getting it from THIS president …" as other guests cheered. Each performer in turn echoed his sentiments.
Foo Fighters frontman and former Washington resident Dave Grohl said: to McCartney: "You’re definitely my hero. And Mr. President, you’re definitely my other hero," before playing "Band on the Run." Grohl was one of several artists, including Elvis Costello, Faith Hill and the Jonas Brothers, who performed McCartney’s songs for the first family and their guests in the East Room ceremony.
