When Bonnie’s father, Rudy Owens, accepted the role of Interim Mayor, he made it a priority to protect his daughter, who wasn’t at all comfortable with the role he suddenly wanted to play in her life.

Professor Shane continued to encourage Bonnie to believe in her powers, but he soon found himself in danger when he revealed too much to the wrong person. Later, Caroline did her best to comfort Tyler after a violent confrontation. Meanwhile, at the lake house, Damon and Matt trained Jeremy, trying to raise his game as a hunter, but Klaus was impatient with their progress and intervened to speed up the process.

At vampire hunter camp, Matt is on the run and is attacked by a vamp! Jeremy takes out the bloodsucker with his crossbow. Flashback to Matt, Damon, Klaus and Jeremy having a pissing match in the pool hall while the turning vampires are awakening. Jeremy doesn’t like the plan, but Klaus tells Jeremy he’s going to compel all the vampires to chase down Matt and he’s the only one who can save him from the ravenous town folk. Damon sends Jeremy out to the car to get his killing tools.

Back to the now, Matt is worn out, but Jeremy tells him he has to get moving – says the other vampires will smell his blood. Damon tells them that the new vampires are struggling to learn to track so it will be a few minutes. Jeremy wants to head to the cabin so he can get Matt inside for protection. Damon agrees to slow them up and takes out one. But then one is on Matt and Elena comes to the rescue. They all rush into the house and Elena wants to know what’s up. Out of the woods comes a score of new vampires all hungry for Matt!

Next morning, an exhausted Jeremy announces the horde is long gone. Elena is mad at Damon for endangering Jeremy. He says his strategy was the fastest way to completing Jer’s hunting mark so she can get the cure. Elena says she doesn’t care about the cure and doesn’t want the people she loves in danger. Damon said he wouldn’t be in danger if he would just kill them all. Elena says they need a plan to protect Matt once the sun goes down.

Damon says he and Jeremy will go on a hunting spree while she takes Matt back home. Damon asks her to trust him with her brother and promises to keep him safe.

At Stefan’s, Rebekah is lounging on his bed reading his diary when he comes out of the shower. She mocks him because of all of the lovey dovey Elena stuff in his journal and he tells her that he’s done with Elena. She asks if once they have the cure that will change and he refuses to answer. Rebekah says she has a plan. She says Shane has one of the keys to resurrecting Silas and they need to steal it. Once they have it, Shane will work on helping them.

Shane is coaching Bonnie on calm. She feels like she failed because she almost killed April with her expression spell. She feels like she has too much power and is out of control. He takes her hand and reassures her. She repeats his words back.

The sheriff and mayor bust in and tell Bonnie to leave. They have some questions for Shane. Shane says they aren’t in their jurisdiction and they haul him out, headed to Mystic Falls where they do have jurisdiction.

Back at the hunter camp, Jeremy and Damon decide the vamps must have gone back to the bar. Damon gives him some advice and Jer says to save it since Elena isn’t there to impress. Damon calls him a dumbass and says he’s trying to keep him alive.

In the bar, there’s rock blaring and blood smears on the floor. Damon says there’s something off. Jeremy stalks with his crossbow. In the walk in cooler they find all the vampires dead and stacked up. Kol walks in and takes credit for the mass kill. He says they need to have a chat. Great – another annoying original…

Damon wants to know what Kol wants – he says Klaus’ bragging about Jeremy’s hunter’s mark led him straight to them. Kol tells them that finding the cure risks waking someone dangerous. Damon said Silas isn’t his problem. Kol said Silas’s followers told him that when he rose, he would bring the end of all time. He says that being an immortal you can see why he’s opposed to time ending.

Kol says they are willing to risk raising him to find the cure and he can’t let it happen. Kol tells him to call off the imbecilic treasure hunt. He says he can’t kill Jer because he doesn’t want the hunter’s curse for the next century so he’ll just rip off Jeremy’s arms. Damon attacks Kol and tells Jeremy to bail.

Stefan and Rebekah are tearing up Shane’s office looking for the key. Rebekah says Stefan needs to chill out. She finds a stash of herbs and offers him some which he declines. She tells him he was a lot more fun in the 1920s and he says he was a mindless killer. She reminds him of all the fun they had. Stefan admits they did have some and Rebekah says they should start having some. She tells him the professor won’t be back for a while – she made sure of it.

At the sheriff station, Shane thinks it’s ridiculous they’re accusing him of engineering a mass murder (the council’s) and Bonnie takes up for him. Bonnie says the pastor was crazy and her dad says he’s calculating. He reveals that April told them that he confessed to her and that Rebekah confirmed it. Bonnie heads back into interrogation and says if he’s going to admit it to anyone, it will be to her.

Liz doesn’t want Bonnie in there, but reluctantly leaves. She tells him they said Rebekah said he confessed but she knows it’s a lie. He said it’s not a lie.

Back in Mystic Falls, Matt says she never should have trusted Damon. He says the old her would never have trusted Jeremy in Damon’s hands. Elena gets a call from Jer who tells her that Kol has Damon and he barely escaped. Elena goes to Klaus for help. She says it’s his fault and he says Kol never liked Damon. She tells him to call him off and he says she has no right to demand anything of him.

They agree they both want the cure, but he wants to destroy it. She begs Klaus and he relents. He dials up his little brother and Kol says he was just having fun. Klaus wants to know where Damon is and he says he gave him a good beating. He tells him if he doesn’t leave Jeremy and Damon alone, he’ll be back in his box. Kol compels Damon to shove a stake into his stomach.

Kol tells Damon that he really doesn’t want Elena cured. He says deep down he probably wants Jeremy dead because he’s the only thing tethering Elena to humanity. Kol tells Damon that he won’t remember what he’s going to say and then he compels him to find and kill Jeremy. Ooh.

Elena tells Jeremy the hunter thing is over. Jer is appalled that she still trusts Damon and he says he only wants the map. She tries to comfort him and he tells her not to get close because his vampire killing instincts are in overdrive. He tells her he wants to get the cure for her but doesn’t know how to do it.

In Shane’s office, Stefan and Rebekah are smoking up and rifling his stuff. He seems to have quite the collection of the macabre – most of his artifacts are associated with death. Stefan throws a ritual knife at her face and she grabs it at the last moment. Rebekah tells him that she didn’t compel Elena from his mind because he needs to learn. She tells him they had fun in the 20s because they didn’t care and just did what felt good – feeding, boozing and sex. He tells her the sex was good because she’s crazy. Rebekah tells him he’s not the model of sanity. She tells him to stop caring and moves closer to him.

Someone comes into Shane’s office and retrieves the key. She takes him by the throat and congratulates him on finding it and asks him who he is.

At the cabin, Damon’s at the door and Elena wants to know what happened and he says Kol. She’s relieved they got away. Damon wants to find Jeremy – says he owes him an apology, but he’s gone back to Mystic Falls.

Back at the jail, Bonnie comes back in to chat with Shane – she turns the camera off. He insists he’s not a killer. He says Pastor Young was depressed. He tells her that it wasn’t mass murder, it was a ritual to raise Silas. He tells her it doesn’t matter because Silas is going to bring them back. She tells him he’s crazy and he says he’s passionate. She says he’s full on crazy and goes to leave. Shane says in their first session she told him she worried that working her magic hurt her Grams. He asks if she wouldn’t like to see her again.

At the grill Damon finds Matt bussing tables. He wants to know where Jeremy is. Elena asks if Matt is okay and he says he is all things considered. Damon heads toward Jeremy with murder in his eyes, but Elena’s voice stops him. He turns back and Jeremy is gone. He’s hiding in the store room ready with a weapon. Damon walks away from her in pursuit of Jeremy. Damon says Kol must have compelled him – he says if he finds Jeremy he’s going to kill him.

Jeremy is hiding in the tunnels and Damon calls to him – he tells him not to stop. He says Kol has compelled him and if he finds him he’s going to have to kill him. He tells him to run for his life.

Rebekah is torturing the guy who found the key. She says she knows he wasn’t compelled because he’s full of vervain. Stefan says they can take him home and wait for the vervain to wear off and then compel him into telling. The guy bites off his own tongue and kills himself. Rebekah wants to know if it’s her bastard brother or his that compelled him and Stefan says there may be a third team in the race.

Bonnie asks Shane if she helps him will it bring her Grams back. He says her reckless use of magic is why Grams is being tortured on the other side. Bonnie snaps and used her magic to hurt him. He tells her she likes using her magic. Her dad walks in and tells her to stop. Bonnie throws up fire and tells him to get out. Shane tells her to look at him and take a deep breath. He tells her she is in control. She puts out the flames and quits tormenting his hand. She walks out. Shane tells the mayor his daughter is a prodigy and that with his guidance she can be one of the most powerful witches in the world. But he says she’s a time bomb without him.

Stefan gets a call but Rebekah snatches the phone. She tells them that Kol compelled Damon to kill Jeremy. She says if he cares about her or the cure or Jeremy to please come help. Rebekah rings off and says that’s interesting for both of them.

In the tunnels, Damon yells at him to not stop running. Jeremy springs onto him and Damon knocks him down. Jeremy shoots him and Damon says he has to shoot him in the heart. He tells him he’s a hunter and he needs to do his job. He tells Jeremy he has to kill him to stop Damon from killing him. Jeremy shoots.

Damon wakes up in the tunnels and pulls a bullet out of his head. He says Jeremy is an idiot for shooting him in the head. He calls out to Jeremy, saying it was dumb and that he should have killed him when he had the chance. He’s back on the hunt.

Rebekah confronts Kol and tells him that if kills Jeremy that Klaus will be furious. She holds a dagger at his back and tells him if she does it, the compelling will stop. Kol flips her around and starts to dagger her. He says their family needs to learn to settle their arguments differently. Klaus comes in and interrupts and Kol takes off. Klaus says she needs a lesson in how to properly dagger a sibling and she tells him off and leaves too.

Jeremy is out of the tunnels but exhausted and bleeding in the woods. Elena gets in between them and asks him to stop. She says she knows he doesn’t want to hurt Jeremy. He says he can’t stop. She tells him to resist. She tells him she loves him and he loves her. She begs him to do it for her. Jeremy is panting on the ground and Damon says sorry. He tells Jer to shoot him now. Stefan shows up and pins Damon and snaps his neck. He turns to Elena and says you’re welcome.

Stefan has Damon in the cells in their house. He bled Damon out so he’d be weak. Damon says he sounds torn up about it – not. He tells Stefan they need to go after Kol to get him to drop the compulsion. Damon wants to see Elena and he says the sire bond is a problem. He plans to keep Damon locked up until the compulsion is broken and Elena is cured. Then, he says, they can do whatever the hell they want.

Elena comes in and wants to see Damon. She promises not to let him out and he says she’s sired and won’t be able to help it. She wants to know why he’s with Rebekah – he’s pissed that she asks. She apologizes and he tells her he doesn’t care what she does. She tells him he’s hurt and acting out and it’s not him. He tells her it is him – that she doesn’t know what he’s like when he’s not in love with her. He says he’ll tell Damon she stopped by. Elena takes the hint and leaves.

Bonnie offers her dad an apology. He tells her he’s going to get her some help and she insists that she’s okay. He tells her she lost control and that Shane said… She interrupts, not liking that he’s listening to Shane. He says the fact that she thinks she doesn’t need help means she needs it even more.

Klaus comes to see Elena and Jeremy and says he’s there for his hunter. He says he’ll be safer with him since Kol is after him. Elena tells him they’ll take their chances without him. Klaus says when Kol comes be sure to let him know before he burns their house to the ground. He tells him there’s no shortage of people for him to turn or loved ones for him to threaten. He tells him to sleep well.

Rebekah is drinking when Stefan barges in saying not knocking is their thing. He’s surprised that she didn’t dagger Kol. She says he turned it around on him. Stefan wants to know where the headstone key is and she says she’s hidden it away. She tells him he’s betrayed her twice and she’s betrayed her never. She wants to know why he’s there. He shows her. They launch into a rough sexcapade. Yummy!

Jeremy says it’s never going to end – if Kol doesn’t kill him, Klaus is going to keep making him kill someone. Elena tells him that if he kills one original, their entire sire line dies. She says he must kill Kol before he can kill him!
