RECAP:

#Hannibal starts with a gun firing and glass shattering. It strikes Chilton in the face as he sits in an interrogation room. It does through his cheek and out the back of his head. Chilton talks about the dead having the luxury of being done with what they lost. He’s talking to Mason Verger who is bed ridden and has a half-face mask on. Mason asks Chilton how long it takes him to put on his face and makeup each morning.

Chilton says not too long with his routine down. Mason says I’ll show you mine if you show me yours. Chilton pulls off his mask and we see a scarred eye that’s sightless. He then wipes his face with a cloth and we see the hole there. Mason pulls off his mask as Chilton pulls out his fake jaw piece. Mason’s lower face is almost featureless. Chilton asks about the reward Mason is offering for info on Hannibal Lecter.

Mason says it’s a million dollars. Chilton says Mason doesn’t want a therapist, he wants a profiler. Mason says he wants to understand Hannibal to understand himself. Chilton says he survived Hannibal and that’s all he needs to understand but Mason says Hannibal intended him to live like this. He says Hannibal is out in the world having a good time. Chilton asks how he relieves the agony of waiting on his capture and asks what he fantasizes about.

He asks what would happen if Hannibal was in his hands. Mason says he’s done talking to him. Chilton says – happy hunting and leaves. Will and Hannibal are in a deadly embrace as Hannibal says he couldn’t leave without him. Will wakes in his hospital bed and the doctor asks how he feels. Will says thirsty. He gives him some water and the doctor asks if he’s well enough for a visitor. He lets in Chilton who’s carrying flowers.

He asks if Will was expecting someone else. Will says hoping. Chilton says he wanted him to live and knew exactly how to cut him. Will says he left them to die. Abigail says they didn’t. Chilton says they’ve been suckers and that Hannibal set them up and knocked them down. He says it was easy for Hannibal. He says Will had encephalitis but Chilton had no excuse. He says he’s learned a lot of new things about himself and about Will.

Will says imitation allows you to understand the behavior of others. Chilton says he has literally felt his pain. Will says they have matching scars. Chilton says Will needs a friend and can help him get Hannibal out of his head. He tells Will there’s an opportunity for them to catch the man who maimed and framed them. Will says there’s no opportunity for Chilton. He says the optimist thinks they live in the best of worlds and the pessimist believes that is true.

He tells Will this is his best world and he won’t get a better one. Will nods off. We see Jack and Will sitting at the table while Hannibal serves them a large platter. Will is looking at the scene outside himself. He watches Jack, he watches himself and Hannibal. We see him holding Jack while Hannibal slices his throat. We see Will assembling something in his barn. Jack crosses the snowy yard and goes into the barn where Will works.

Jack says he hopes he would come to him but gets why he didn’t. Will asks what he wants and Jack says he’s there to make sure he doesn’t contradict the official story. He says they were wounded in the course of heroic duty as FBI officers. Will says that’s not true and Jack says them not going together was his bad. Will says all their choices were calculated but Jack says no but their decisions are. He asks if Will remembered when he decided to call Hannibal.

Will says he just call and didn’t decide. He says he deliberated while the phone rang then decided once he heard his voice. Jack says – you told him we knew. Will says he told him to leave because he wanted him to run. Jack asks why. Will sighs and says it’s because he was his friend. Will says he wanted to run away with Hannibal. We see Chilton with Alana Bloom. She’s alive! Chilton says he tried to warn her then she ended up pushed out a window.

She’s in some sort of odd device for her spinal injury. Alana says she’s always enjoyed the word defenestration and now she gets to use it in casual conversation. (Note – defenestration is based on the German word fenster and means to throw or be thrown out a window). He asks how many bones she broke and she says she didn’t break them herself. She says they told her a lot of marrow got into her blood and she should expect to think differently.

Chilton says he doesn’t want to kick her while she’s down but to remind her how she got down. He says we could use some group therapy. She says he’s not interested in we, but in Will. He says her being broken has been her breakthrough but Will hasn’t had his and is waiting on Hannibal for it. He says it’s only a matter of time for them to be back in each other’s orbit and says it would be a shame not to have good seats for it. She says that will require some manipulation. She smiles at him.

We see Alana in a wheelchair at Hannibal’s. She thinks about the violence that last went on there and Hannibal says she was so afraid of him the last time she saw him. She wheels down the hall and sees Will sitting on the floor. He asks what she’s doing there and she says looking for him. She asks why he’s there and he says he’s visiting old friends. She asks if he’s tempted to forget and he says he doesn’t want to. He says he’s building rooms in his memory palace for all his friends.

They talk what friendship with Hannibal means and she asks if he can ignore the worst in the man after all he’s done. Will tells her he came there to be alone and asks her to leave. She rolls back out of the room. We see bloody Abigail sitting there with him. Margot Verger is out riding when Alana shows up steadied by her cane. She introduces herself and Margot says she’s the new psychiatrist. Alana says she went one exit too far and isn’t sure this was the right entrance.

Margot introduces herself and Alana says there’s a witchy beauty about the place. Margot says in the Spring there are lilacs and you can’t smell the slaughterhouses associated with the Verger name. She asks her to let her brother know she’s there but Margot says he knows. She says if she can’t take talking to Mason, she can answer her questions. She says if her brother offers her chocolate, politely refuse. Mason is in a wheelchair on the balcony and tells Margot to leave them.

Alana limps out to where he sits. He greets her and turns to look at her. She returns his greeting. He says he thanks God for what happened and says it was his salvation then asks if she’s accepted Jesus. Alana says she was raised religious but doesn’t share the sentiment now. Mason says he’s right with Jesus and it’s all good. He says Jesus will rise him up and smite his enemies. He says he knows Hannibal got deeper inside her than he did the rest of them then chokes for a moment.

She asks if he wants the nurse. He says he’s fine and says it’s all okay now. Alana says he’s supposed to share relevant information with the FBI then asks if he’s done that. He says not exactly then says it’s not a revenge thing. He says he forgave Dr Lecter as the savior forgave the Roman soldiers. Alana says forgiveness isn’t all it’s cracked up to be and says she appreciates old testament revenge even if she doesn’t have a lot of religion.

We see Jack and Hannibal struggling and Jack grievously injured with his ringing phone in his hand. Jack is in bed with a monitor beeping on him. He asks Bella if he died. She says he did a lot of things and dying may have been among them. She says she’s glad he’s stubborn and says he won’t go in the ground with her and to stop trying. He says he did die and she says she’s not afraid of dying or what it will be like. Her breathing is very shallow. She says she’s more curious of the what if’s about it.

She says he can do something she can’t and says he can cut out what’s killing him. Jack meets with Chilton who tells him he’s losing focus but Jack says he refocused. Jack says Homeland Security is more important than the FBI and psychopaths and Chilton says not to him. Jack says after Chilton was shot he copyrighted Hannibal the Cannibal. Chilton says Jack is alive because he didn’t pull the glass out of his neck and Will is alive because Hannibal wants him to be.

Jack says maybe it’s a friendship that ends after the disemboweled. Chilton says Will will lead Jack to Hannibal but Jack says he let it go. Chilton asks if he’s going to let Hannibal have Will then? Jack says he needs to go home to his wife and walks out. At home, Jack sits by Bella’s bedside as she struggles with her breath in her sleep. He goes to her side and puts his head on her chest. Seems like she’s very close to death. He strokes her hand then kisses it twice.

He writes down her vitals then takes a vial of medication out of its spot. He goes to inject it into her IV. He fills the syringe and gives her the medicine. He lies down beside her and kisses her head. She moans without opening her eyes. He cries as her life slips away. Later, we see the bed is empty and neatly made. Jack stands staring blankly. He hears someone speak his name then sees Bella holding out a dress for him to look at. She walks closer and he says he loves her.

But then he blinks and it’s Alana standing there holding the dress. He nods and says she’ll look beautiful. He says Bella is dead and says that should change the view from the windows. He says it’s not right if it stays the same. We see Bella having her makeup done and her being dressed for her funeral. Jack also dresses with care. Her wedding rings are slipped onto her finger. Jack stands in the church and thinks about her walking towards him at their wedding.

Bella smiles and carries a bouquet. He kisses her softly on the head and we see he’s doing this as she lies in her coffin in the chapel. He sees a bouquet of flowers and plucks the card out. He opens the envelope and sees it’s from Hannibal. He writes that he’s sorry about Bella. Will comes in and sits behind him in a pew. Jack says he didn’t think about Bella dying this morning. He says he thinks she was hoping to die while he was out of the room but he was there.

He says he held onto her as her heart stopped and her brain died. Will says he hopes Bella is somewhere comfortable today. Jack says he hopes she can see in his heart. He says he knew it was coming but it still hurts. He tells Will he doesn’t have to die on him too. He hands Will the card from Hannibal. Mason complains as his mask is pulled off by Cordell who tells him pain is a good thing. Cordell says scar tissue demonstrates self-preservation at the cellular level.

Mason talks about those who believe in the transubstantiation of Christ through communion. He asks Cordell if he’s capable of anything and says he pays him a large salary for his care and feeding and says he wants him to start arrangements for Hannibal to be eaten alive. Cordell asks if he has a preference for how he would like it. Mason says if he has lips, he would smile. We see Mason unwrapped by nurses after his attack. He had skin grafts and restorative work to cover the horror he had become.

He’s given a mirror after his wig was applied. Now he complains to Alana about Hannibal eluding them and has dropped off the Earth. She says he’s likely in Europe and suggests he can find Hannibal using his taste in wine and truffles. She says Hannibal’s name will change, but his tastes won’t. He asks Alana if she knows what he would favor. He asks if Hannibal favored her and she says she amused Hannibal but Mason didn’t.

He asks if she thinks Hannibal genuinely cared for her and she says she has no idea and says last they spoke, he promised to kill her. He asks how she likes to use understanding as a predator’s tool and she says it’s a psychiatric tool like she’s always used it. He asks why not take this to Jack but she says he’s done at the FBI. Mason asks how he got her in his pocket and says he’s all ears only they’ve been redistributed.

She says he’s preparing the theatre of Hannibal’s death and she’s just doing her part to get him to the stage. Jack pulls up at Will’s place on a snowy night. He hears the dogs barking as he gets out and climbs onto the porch. Alana opens the door and lets the dogs run out. She tells Jack that Will is already gone and says he knows what he has to do then asks Jack if he knows. Will unties a boat and raises the sail. He casts off and sails from the marina.
