Kate Middleton and Prince William are preparing for their tour of India, and the royal couple already have plans to visit the Taj Mahal. There, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will have an agenda that includes visiting the bench where William’s mother once sat – alone – for a now iconic photo. The Taj Mahal visit will honor Princess Diana, and Prince Charles and Queen Elizabeth are irate with the idea.
When the media and the world were first catching onto the fall of Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s marriage, the solo trip fueled the fire in Charles and Diana’s crumbling relationship. The image of Princess Diana sitting alone on the bench with the Taj Mahal in the background became the poster of what was clearly a lonely and depressed Princess – completely on her own. The moment also saw Princess Diana’s first public statement hinting at trouble when a reporter asked about her feelings toward the massive tomb and she replied, “It was a healing experience … very healing.” When pressed further by the reporter she smiled and retorted, “Work it out for yourself.”
The moment catapulted Diana’s misery into the forefront and was her first move in retaliation. Princess Diana had basically given the reporter a free pass to write and share whatever they pleased about the royal couple’s thinly veiled marriage breakdown.
Prince William and Kate Middleton are planning on return to the bench where Diana made one of her retaliatory moves against Prince Charles. The goal of the trip is to forge a strong relationship with Chancellor, George Osborne, but that doesn’t mean the royal couple won’t miss the opportunity to honor Princess Diana, especially when the royal couple are enduing reported marriage troubles of their own. According to the Daily Mail, the visit is currently being planned and Prince William is “not squeamish” about the idea of visiting the spot where his mother made a stand for herself.
Prince Charles and Queen Elizabeth, on the other hand, are irate with the idea. Visiting the spot reminds people that Prince Charles refused to join his wife on the trip to India. The return to Diana’s lonely little bench makes Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles look awful for driving Princess Diana into solitude. However, Kate and William are not backing down. The Duchess loves to invoke Diana’s memory; Princess Charlotte’s christening is a huge example of Kate and Will’s passion for bringing up Diana’s powerful memory up.
So, who will win this royal battle? Will Kate Middleton and Prince William get to honor Princess Diana on their upcoming trip to India?
