‘The Americans’ spoilers Season 4 Episode 12 for ‘A Roy Rogers in Franconia’ episode this week hint that Dennis Aderholt (Brandon J Dirden) may be the first one to get a crack at busting the Directorate S operation even though he has no idea how close he is to a major FBI breakthrough.
Dennis has figured out something is up with the mail robot that ties to when it was sent out for repair. You’ll recall that Gabriel (Frank Langella) assigned someone else to change out the robot surveillance tapes even before Martha Hanson (Alison Wright) left on her permanent USSR vacation.
The teaser trailer for Episode 12 shows surveillance video of Dennis holding someone at gunpoint that’s accessing the mail robot. Dennis and Stan Beeman (Noah Emmerich) have talked casually about the Martha issue, but it’s Dennis that has really kept digging.
If Dennis nails the guy or gal changing out the mail robot tapes, he’s one person away from Gabriel unless that person has never seen Gabriel or Claudia (Margo Martindale) and is only doing a dead drop. Even so, the FBI could turn this asset against the Directorate.
Stan meets with Oleg Burov (Costa Ronin) but Oleg tells Stan that he won’t keep seeing him. The FBI wants Stan to turn Oleg but it’s not clear after Stan told him this fact, if Stan doesn’t want to turn him because of their shared past with Nina – or is trying to turn him by revealing his orders.
Either way, Oleg hands off something important to Stan and then tells him that they are done after this. What intel could Oleg be sharing? Is Oleg so upset with Nina’s execution that he’s turning traitor on his country? Or is he setting Stan up by sharing false intel?
Paige Jennings (Holly Taylor) is still reeling after watching her mom kill a mugger and potential rapist but also impressed at her mom’s badass skills. But when Paige has more questions, Elizabeth Jennings (Keri Russell) shuts her down and says she doesn’t need to know everything.
Paige reminds her she killed a man in front of her but Elizabeth is less than moved – of course Paige has no idea how high her mom’s body count is. Paige will ask her parents if they trust her or not. The problem is, last time they did, she went to Pastor Tim and now they are all at risk.
This incident allows Paige to see her mother in a new light. Philip Jennings (Matthew Rhys) and Gabriel meet with William (Dylan Baker) to ratchet the pressure on him to access the level four disease sample they want. Gabriel offers William an out if he’ll do this one last thing.
News broke recently that ‘The Americans’ has been renewed for two more seasons and will end in 2018. With just one episode left after Episode 12, it will be exciting to see what cliffhangers we’ll be left with as we wrap Season 4 and await Season 5 of the finely written F/X spy show.
For reference, the title of this episode ‘A Roy Rogers in Franconia’ likely refers to a Roy Rogers (the fast food burger joint) located in Franconia, Virginia which is about 30 minutes outside of DC and likely close to where Stan, Elizabeth and Philip all live in their Virginia suburb.
