The Young and the Restless spoilers tease that the long-awaited, or unwanted, reunion of Sharon (Sharon Case) and Nick (Joshua Morrow) may become possible again. Yes, Dylan (Steve Burton) and Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan) currently stand in the way of Sharon and Nick getting back together, eventually. But what if both secondary characters are about to be written out, instead of just one?
New head writer Sally Sussman has stated that there are eight indespensible characters on Y&R, in no particular order: Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott), Victor (Eric Braeden), Jack (Peter Bergman), Ashley (Eileen Davidson), Nick, Sharon, Billy (Jason Thompson) and Victoria (Amelia Heinle).
Readers noticed that no mention was made of Dylan, or Chelsea in that listing. And they understand that Sussman doesn’t mean that any character could be instantly written out of Genoa City. Her point lends itself to honest speculation, which is what helps to create ongoing chatter among soap fans.
Burton’s announced voluntary departure from Y&R this fall led to him filming his final scenes earlier this month. His version of Dylan will last be seen next month. No confirmation, or sourced conjecture about a recast is available. Therefore, it’s reasonable to believe that Dylan will leave Genoa City in some fashion.
Egan is a product of the last regime. Her contract is for regular status, but she’s hardly guaranteed indefinitely employment. No one can claim that Chelsea is indispensable, especially considering Adam’s (Justin Hartley) death, or extended disappearance.
Chelsea was originally tied to Billy, but there appears to be no plan in place to reconnect her to that character. She also was involved with Dylan, who, as noted, appears to be on his way out. Chelsea’s growing connection to Nick was written by the previous head writer. Time will tell if Sussman thinks that potential supercouple makes sense.
Shick was nearly remarried in 2014, but Gina Tognoni’s debut as Phyllis literally stopped that pair’s seeming revival. Various revelations and fights followed through present day. However, if Sharon and Nick are both single in the near future then the option to reconnect them becomes viable.
There are divisions among the fan ranks where a Shick reunion is concerned. Some dislike one, or both characters. Others don’t believe these two particular people are good together and never were. But another contingent believes in redemption. Those souls also think that Faith’s (Alyvia Alyn Lind) parents should be together, as sacrifice is part of all mature relationships.
January will be the first indicator. If Dylan is written out, then only Chelsea will remain as a barrier. Of course, one would also need to believe that perceived soul mates always retain the chance to reclaim their love again.
