There is exciting news for soap opera fans. CDL has learned that “Dynasty” will be returning to night time television on the CW. The modernized update of the 1980’s series will tell the story of two of the country’s wealthiest families, The Colbys and the Carringtons. “Melrose Place” veteran Grant Show recently signed on to star as the wealthy patriarch Blake Carrington. The role was played by John Forsythe in the original series. Elizabeth Gillies (“Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll‘”) will play Blake’s daughter Fallon Carrington and Nathalie Kelley (“Vampire Diaries”) will be her soon-to-be stepmother, Cristal. Sam Adegoke (“Switched at Birth”) and Robert Christopher Riley (“Hit the Floor”) round out the cast.
“Dynasty” will chronical the battle between the Fallon and Cristal as the try to control their children and each other. The show will give a glimpse into the secret lives of the rich and powerful including boardroom deals, betrayal and even murder. Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, (both creators of “Gossip Girl”) and Sallie Patrick (producer of “Revenge”) will write the show with the original Dynasty creators Esther and Richard Shapiro on board as executive producers.
The original show aired on ABC for eight seasons and was the number one rated show in the country in 1985. It was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best TV Drama Series every year from 1981 to 1986 and won the award in 1984. It was also nominated for 24 Emmy Awards over the course of the series, but only won once, for Outstanding Costumes for a Series in 1984. “Dynasty” lead to the creation of a successful line of fashion and luxury products, and also a spin-off series called “The Colbys”. The series declined considerably in popularity during its last two seasons and it was ultimately cancelled in the spring of 1989 after nine seasons and 220 episodes.
