General Hospital (GH) spoilers tease that Sonny’s (Maurice Benard) future on the ABC soap isn’t set in stone, but he’s certainly hoping that things work out. In an interview with ABC Soaps in Depth, Benard revealed his plans to concerned fans. He wanted to tell everyone what he intends to do once his current contract is up.
Benard indicated that he wants to stay on GH. “Another year and it’ll be my 25th anniversary,” Benard said. “If I’m allowed to do one more year…” General Hospital undoubtedly wants to keep Sonny on board, but Benard admitted that you never know what might go down. He pointed out that “anything can happen in negotiations.”
Nevertheless, Benard promised that he appreciates his job and wants to make it work. He suggested that he’s “all in” and loves the people gets to work with at GH. Of course, Steve Burton (Patient Six, ex-Jason) is one of Benard’s beloved costars. Now that Benard’s onscreen and offscreen pal is back, that could play a role in his decision to stick around.
After all, it’s easy to see that Benard is having a good time with Burton. It comes through during Patient Six and Sonny’s scenes together! Burton has signed on for three years, so will Benard stay to act alongside him? Like Benard said, we’ll just have to see how negotiations go! Let’s start with renewing this year and go from there.
Benard remains hopeful about what’s ahead. “I can’t wait to be here another year – at least one more year,” Benard said. He also talked about how he doesn’t offer his input in the stories much anymore. Benard suggested that he usually goes with the flow unless it’s “really out there.”
The current twin drama certainly falls under the category, but Benard is willing to give this particular story a pass. Most GH fans are OK with something a bit nutty, too. Burton’s return has been a huge success so far. We got a great actor back and the mystery has been intriguing, so viewers might as well just sit back and enjoy the ride.
