A man drives a dump truck up the road in a residential area. There are cops everywhere. He drives to a bend in the road and gets out. An officer shoots a man. He is down. The officer calls in for back up while yelling for the man to get back in the truck. The neighborhood people all come out of their houses. Some are recording the incident with their phones. Back up arrives.

The DOJ gets the call. A black cop has shot a white kid. The governor wants them to step in. The appointed lead at the DOJ is sitting in a room with rookie prosecutors. He needs a cleaner, a lawyer who can take this on. A black rookie attorney named Preston wants the gig. He can do it. He spouts off his impressive record before leaving to head home.

Ashe is visiting her daughter at her ex’s house. The new wife comes in. She demands the daughter go to bed. Ashe takes it all with stride. She leaves her daughter to go get ready. She enters the kitchen and throws a vase at the new wife’s head. Javi, the husband steps in and brings her outside.

Ashe meets Preston at the airport. Ashe is an investigator there to assist him. Once they land in NC, the pair hit the local Sheriff’s Office. They head into the interview room to speak with the officer involved in the shooting. Officer Beck isn’t an open book. Ashe tries to connect with her own personal shooting story. They shot an 18-year-old in the chest who didn’t have a gun, but a cellphone. It was justifiable, she feared for her life. He recounts his own story. He was on patrol. He pulled the kid over. He was belligerent.  He wouldn’t cooperate or get out of the car. When he did step out, he reached for the officer’s gun so he shot him 4 times. Preston asks if he profiled him because he was a white guy in a black neighborhood. The investigators found marijuana in the white teen’s car. The officer shuts down.

In the car, Ashe is angry with Preston. She could have managed to keep Beck talking, but he went cold with Preston’s accusatory tone. He reminds her that he is her boss. She reminds him that he is young and she has a lot of experience.

They head to the location of the shooting. The blood is still on the street. Neighbors come out. They ask what they might have seen. No-one is willing to talk. Preston tries to connect. It doesn’t work. The cops roll up but sit parked at a distance. The neighborhood people scatter.

Ashe and Preston head to the dead teen’s home. They visit with his mom. She knows her son didn’t do anything wrong. He didn’t do drugs and he would never reach for a cop’s gun.

The governor holds a press conference that gets heated. A local pastor has a lot of questions. Why id the DOJ investigating a white kids shooting? Preston steps up to the podium to speak. He makes known that humanity comes first not color. He is looking for the truth. After he steps down, the pastor invites him to her next sermon.

Ashe and Preston have drinks to end the night at the local bar. After they finish up, Preston heads to the neighborhood in plain clothes. The kid he talked to early tells him to talk to the lady in the houses, Ms. Campbell. Preston follows the kid in his car while the teen bikes there. Preston gets out of the car and is attacked from behind.

The next morning, Ashe brings coffee to Preston. She sees the bruises on his face. She tells him to let her do the investigating. They head to talk to the lady in the house. The lady lets them in. Why would they think she knew anything? They look around. Ashe sees the pictures. She asks her about her son and when she lost him. The woman tells them that her son Joey died. The cops showed up to tell her, no sorry, no apologies. They looked through his things, found weed and told her she could be arrested for it. They didn’t investigate, just threatened her, case closed.

Ashe waits outside the sheriff’s office and invites the officers to have a drink. They hit the local bar. She asks them questions in between sharing war stories. A man comes up and serves Ashe with papers. She is embarrassed. She heads to her car and calls Javier. He tells her that she gave him no choice. She needs to get a lawyer. She begs him not to take her daughter away. She will get help. He hangs up.

Ashe and Preston are out to dinner with his brother, a football star. There is some strong brother rivalry. Preston spent his summer in the Alps with his rich friends while his brother is a hood rat. Ashe doesn’t want to leave yet. The brother offers to take her home. Preston is irritated. Preston texts Sarah, the governor’s assistant. He heads to her hotel room with a bottle of wine.

Ashe is in Preston’s brother’s limo. He kisses her. She pushes him away, but changes her mind quickly and gets on top of him.

Preston wakes up to Sarah arguing on the phone. Beck is on the news. There is video of him saying “he finally got his license to shoot these crackers.” The footage is causing heads to spin with the media playing it on everywhere.

The press is camped outside of Beck’s house. The sheriff is inside talking to him. Beck apologizes. The sheriff understands but he needs to place Beck on administrative duty until the DOJ is done investigating. Beck wants to make a statement, but they don’t want Beck to talk to the media or deviate from the language they spoke about.

Ashe and Preston meet in the hotel hallway. Ashe asks him about custody. They head to church, taking the pastor up on her offer. The pastor invites the woman from the houses up and the white teen’s mom. The church is quite until she gives them a speech about a mother’s love.

A kid on a bike is being chased by a car. He is peddling as fast as he can. He jumps off the bike and runs. Two men chase him. He hides in brush.

THE END!
