The Young and the Restless Spoilers: Chelsea’s Lengthy Two-Part Pursuit – Adam Newman Returns During Fall Sweeps

The Young and the Restless spoilers tease that Chelsea’s (Melissa Claire Egan) California pursuit won’t lead directly to Adam’s (formerly played by Justin Hartley) reappearance this summer. However Chelsea will have success locating Chloe first and that takes place this summer according to The Young and the Restless buzz. That nature of soapy storylines means, if persistent Y&R spoilers prove true, that Chelsea won’t learn that her husband is alive until the fall.

Nick (Joshua Morrow) encouraged Chelsea to find Chloe (Elizabeth Hendrickson) so she could gain peace of mind and heart. That effort will lead to partial success this summer according to The Young and the Restless spoilers, as it will tie into Kevin’s (Greg Rikaart) write-out. Seasoned daytime audiences know that one plot point is often a setup for another. So Chelsea’s interest in finding Chloe appears to actually be a plot path to eventually learning that Adam is alive.

Recent Y&R news that various male actors were auditioning for a role of Adam Newman on The Young and the Restless caused many to believe that the Adam character was being recast. Certain people have speculated that that Justin Hartley can’t return to the show, or will choose not to return on a limited basis due to his commitment at NBC (This Is Us). Others feel that Michael Muhney isn’t being considered for rehire, as he was in the summer of 2014, due to back-office political decisions having been cemented.

In the past, co-executive producer and head writer Sally Sussman advised that she would only bring Adam back if the Christian paternity issue became crucial to a current storyline. As of late-spring that issue isn’t in play, which is another reason why Chelsea’s pursuit of Chloe doesn’t appear likely to yield a quick Adam-find.

A returned Adam, regardless of whoever plays him, would have to deal with Victor (Eric Braeden). Both men finally reached accord last September, a day before the cabin blew up. However, Nick would surely inform both Chelsea and his brother about Victor’s full involvement with Chloe. That assumes Chloe wouldn’t have already told Chelsea about that dysfunctional arrangement herself. The results of either, or both, outcomes would surely mean a renewed Adam-Victor war.

For reasons involving the story itself and significant fan interest in Adam, this decision should play out slowly. A widely praised choice proved that Hartley’s hire was smart. It’s possible, but hardly certain that gold can be struck twice.

The believability of bringing Adam back from the dead again will prove to be challenging, especially if a new actor is hired. Face-change issues could easily fall into the suspension of disbelief category. So the real issue involves the choice of an actor who can fill what became an important role during two different Y&R stints (Muhney’s and Hartley’s).

Any new Adam Newman would need to carve his own niche. That path would be created by Y&R’s writing staff, which means serious and strategic planning that also involves the impact on multiple other character’s fictional lives.
