The Young and the Restless spoilers tease that Ashley (Eileen Davidson) is right to be suspicious about her previously estranged mother’s interest in a family reunion. However, Dina’s (Marla Adams) intentions are likely very simple. Sparked by the change of life, she abandoned her husband and children decades ago and moved to Paris, France. But it’s now plausible to believe that Dina’s current actions represent a dying woman’s last hope.
The revival of this ancient storyline naturally peaked the interest of die hard Y&R fans. Those who are old enough to recall Dina’s 1980’s exploits know that she was a certifiably self-centered person during the age of big hair and exaggerated egos. Most modern viewers needed to see the recent batch of retro scenes that filled in Dina’s backstory. Because they’re an honest bunch, many long-time The Young and the Restless fans also benefited from seeing those analog clips as well.
An affair created Ashley, which wasn’t revealed until Davidson’s character was well past childhood. After running around on John Abbott Senior (Jerry Douglas), Adams’ character embraced classic European ideology. But Dina’s subsequent change of life actions eventually created a long period of self-reflection.
Dina has been sincerely apologetic and is genuinely interested in renewing the bonds she once had with her children. As many viewers have likely experienced, some women aren’t cut out to be mothers after they’ve given birth. Similarly, there are various men who can’t handle the pressures of fatherhood. Of course, John’s name can’t be written in that column.
The feelings Ashley, Jack (Peter Bergman) and Traci (Beth Maitland) have about their mother are very complex. It’s true that she abandoned them and then showed little, if any interest in their adult lives, or in the children they created. However, time can allow perspectives and priorities to change. In certain instances, if the offending party is contrite and persistent rapprochement can be achieved.
So Ashley will pretend to be interested in a measured revival of a relationship with her mother. Miss Abbott will do so believing that she’ll eventually reveal Dina’s hidden agenda. But in classic soap opera fashion, Madame Mergeron’s terminal condition will enable a surprise storyline twist. Yes Y&R spoilers tease that fans will learn that Dina is dying and this is a driving force in her desire, her need to reconcile with her children before it’s too late.
As Y&R is a daytime drama, some type of miracle cure could easily be written into the arc. So maybe Dina will be able to restore family ties and live out a rich live as well?
