The Young and the Restless spoilers tease that Dina’s (Marla Adams) attempt to portray Graham (Max Shippee) as her protector will be exposed by Ashley (Eileen Davidson). While Miss Abbott believes that her estranged mother might be dying, she’ll soon learn that Alzheimer’s disease (or something similar) is affecting Dina’s mental capacity.
Then she’ll uncover Graham’s true connection to Dina as well. Traci (Beth Maitland) was the first person to recognize that her mother appeared to be different than she was years ago. Far more emotional, able to show remorse and repeating herself slightly, Dina had certainly changed.
Advanced aging is something that the so-called wonders of modern medicine has enabled. Quality of life issues don’t involve a choice between living until one is slightly past perceived middle-age, or pulling a Chloe (Elizabeth Hendrickson).
Rational human beings don’t think of others as animals to be discarded. They also don’t eliminate themselves under the pretense of the overall good. A cult of death promotes that falsehood as truth. Strong individuals develop the courage to live with and through suffering, to understand its redemptive power and to offer that sacrifice in order to allow those around them to appreciate health and all stages of life.
As Ashley recently implied to Jack (Peter Bergman), she never expected to feel protective of Dina. Yet she now does. That’s exactly what this scribe was referring to in the above paragraph.
Kudos to executive producer Mal Young and to co-executive producer and head writer Sally Sussman for introducing this topic to the audience. The head honchos moved away from purely fantastic stories and have shifted Y&R back to character-driven, topical-based drama. Underdeveloped modern minds might see their choice as boring. But many seasoned souls know differently.
Dina has begun to gain compassion from her offspring. She’s done that by being contrite. Graham might be an opportunist, whose only goal is material gain. Unless, he actually proves to be her own son.
That possibility must be considered as a secondary option. Despite the information Dina’s offered to-date, she might not feel comfortable in presenting her Abbott children with a half-sibling at this stage of her life. That could be why she claimed Graham held another place in her life. If that is true, then Graham is just trying to protect his mom, which is also what Ashley is unexpectedly starting to do as well.
Either of the above scenarios still reveal Dina as a sincere soul at this point in her life. Sure, she abandoned her responsibilities in the past. But her admission in that regard and honest attempt to make amends right now has provided each of her three Abbott offspring with a chance to achieve a real relationship with their mother.
