The Young and the Restless spoilers tease that Sharon Case’s (Sharon) recent social media silence appears to send a loud message. Was the long-time daytime actor simply sending a message to the Emmy voters by not praising Steve Burton (Dylan) after he won an award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, or did her lack of activity also represent an unspoken comment about the storyline her employer created for her?
Case allowed her name to be submitted for nomination in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category this year, but she didn’t advance to the final round. Unless evidence surfaces that her employer was working against her, Case knows that Y&R wasn’t involved in degrading her chances to capture what would have been her second-ever Daytime Emmy award.
Two of Case’s colleagues did advance to the final bracket. Gina Tognoni (Phyllis) bested four others, including Jess Walton (Jill) to take the Emmy. While Case has received five nominations (1996, 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2004) in her career, she’s only earned one top honor. In 1999, she was awarded the Emmy in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series category.
Here’s the main issue – Steve Burton wasn’t just a supporting actor on Y&R, he became an Emmy-winning supporting actor mostly for his efforts in a storyline that featured Case as the main player. Sharon was at the center of the Christian-to-Sully-back-to-Christian (Jude and Ozzy McGuigen all the way through) arc.
Viewers can easily surmise how Case felt when Burton was honored. Basically the voters were saying that Case’s efforts were subpar, the storyline as it related to her character was weak or that both factors were in play. That stings and also stinks.
Seasoned Y&R fans know that Case has consistently delivered outstanding work, even when the material she’s been given has been thin, or repetitive. It has been during those lengthy time periods, including the stretched and convoluted Christian reveal storyline, that Case has shined. A solid actor overcomes all factors.
Case didn’t have to advance to the final Emmy round this year, or if she did, didn’t have to achieve victory in order to be respected. It appeared that Burton may have been awarded top honors as a nod to the overall work he delivered in his career, as he’s seemingly left daytime work indefinitely.
