Piper hangs out with Mia. She is trying to move a cupcake. The friend’s mom calls. Something falls. It was Piper. Ed tells Jo he is done with chemo. She is not all right with his decision. She leaves for work.
Chris updates Jo on a new case about a man who they think was murdered. Jo meets with the man’s wife. She think her husband Alan killed himself. Jo thinks a man Kindred is responsible.
Piper is invited back to an alternate reality again. She talks to the familiar man there for a bit. They talk about Jo and how she likes her. Piper tells him she needs to go now.
Jo is back at the office talking to Emily about how Allan was super smart. He created the IA code. They are interrupted by Chris who has news – Alan is alive.
Alex comes to visit Ed. He is there to talk about chemo. Ed thinks he needs to mind his business. He didn’t chime in when he and Jo split. He also didn’t worry about how that affected his daughter.
Chris updates Jo. They caught Alan sailing. She asks Chris to step out so they can talk. He is annoyed. Emily thinks Jo needs to show Alan what he created, meaning Piper. Meanwhile, Piper and Mia are experimenting with what Piper can do with metal. She moves a paint can but hits Mia with it.
Chris comes to Jo. He doesn’t until why she sidelined him minutes prior. She has him sit down. She tells him about Alan and his creation of AI and how Piper is AI. Chris takes is so well it blows Jo’s mind. He admits later he will freak out and question the universe. Jo laughs. She shares how she hasn’t told anyone about Piper including Piper. They are interrupted. Alan has sent a note with a key.
Jo heads to the bus station. Alan asks her to put her things in a locker. She does. She hears the phone. She finds it under a seat. He tells her to go to a parking space and take the car to rt. 301. She has 3 hours to get there and she can’t talk to anyone. She ends up out in the woods where she sees a camera that sends a high pitched sound. She passes out. A truck pulls up.
Jo and her partner wake up in a living room. Alan comes in. He asked her not to bring a weapon and he found one in her boot. Alan tells her he didn’t create Piper. In fact, he destroyed his lives work to avoid all of this.
Mia and Piper are at the neighbor, Abby’s house to get help for her arm. Abby wants to know why they aren’t in school. Chris is trying to find Abby.
Alan tells Jo that Piper should be destroyed. She is dangerous because she is ever-evolving. Jo tells him Kindred is the danger. Alan thinks he knows how to get Kindred.
Abby drops off the girls to Alex. Meanwhile, someone enters the house at Alan’s. The lights go out. They run through the stairs. Alan sets off his blaring noisemaker. The intruders drop to their news. Alan takes off just as Chris arrives.
At the house, Alex takes Mia’s phone and checks it. He finds a video of Piper moving the paint can.
Back at the station, Jo and the others watch as Kindred is brought in by police. He has been charged with wire fraud. Emily is free to go now. She says her goodbyes.
Back at home, Jo and Ed talk. He doesn’t want to be broken to be a burden. He is going to be around to help. They talk about mom. Jo remembers how she fixed a coat. It was all part of a plan. And now with all this, with the chemo, it feels familiar. Alex interrupts. He has to show them a video. Jo admits she knew about Piper. Alex takes Mia with him because he feels like she isn’t safe. Piper is sad and upset. She enters into another dimension once again to see Emily who tells her this is a test. Now they get to have fun.
