The Young and the Restless spoilers tease that viewers will soon be treated to some more Abbott family flashbacks. CDL reported that Cathy Marks will be returning to Y&R as a younger version of Dina Mergeron (Marla Adams). Viewers will remember that Y&R previously offered some insight into the Abbott family dynamics with a series of flashbacks showing a younger Dina and her family interacting back in the day.
In those flashbacks, viewers saw the devastating effects on the Abbott family when a young Dina made the decision to abandon her husband and children. The situation was particularly difficult on young Jack Abbott (Graham Taylor), who was forced to grow into a man as a result of his mother’s departure.
The flashbacks also chronicled John Abbott’s (Jonathan Stoddard) special relationship and favoritism toward a young Ashley Abbott (Julia D’Arcy Badinger) at the expense of his other children.
The Y&R flashbacks were particularly insightful when it came to showing how the intense rivalry between Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman) and Ashley Abbott (Elieen Davidson) formed when they were youngsters. John clearly treated the two differently and favored his eldest daughter, which had a profound effect on both Jack and Ashley’s psyche.
This time, it seems that Cathy Marks will be flying solo in the flashbacks, which appear to concern only Dina. Dina hasn’t received much screen time lately on Y&R, although Jack and the other characters have commented quite a bit lately on how Dina’s Alzheimer’s is getting worse and she’s getting more and more lost within her own mind.
Perhaps the upcoming flashbacks will chronicle what Dina did after she left her family. There seems to be plenty of mystery surrounding where Dina was and who she was with after she left. Perhaps Jack or Traci Abbott (Beth Maitland) will find some more of Dina’s private mementos and this will lead viewers on a walk down memory lane.
However the current round of flashbacks play out, it will be great to see Cathy Marks back as a young Dina, and it will be a treat to watch the 70s play out again on our screens.
