Will The Young and the Restless Be Cancelled? – Fans Fear Y&R Won’t Return After Massive CBS Layoffs

The Young and the Restless (Y&R) spoilers reveal that CBS has resorted to massive layoffs following the ViacomCBS merger and COVID-19 aka coronavirus crisis. CBS Studios, CBS Television Studios, CBS News, CBS Sports and CBS Entertainment have all been affected. Will The Young and the Restless be cancelled as part of these sweeping changes? Let’s look at what’s really happening here.

A statement was released by CBS to explain a bit more about the situation. “We are restructuring various operations at CBS as part our ongoing integration with Viacom, and to adapt to changes in our business, including those related to COVID-19,” a CBS spokesperson said. “Our thoughts today are with our departing colleagues for their friendship, service and many important contributions to CBS.”

The Young and the Restless was renewed through 2024 back in January, but that was before the pandemic brought filming to a screeching halt in March. The cast and crew haven’t been able to get back on set since then, so Y&R’s currently airing classic theme weeks to fill the airtime.

Of course, everyone’s been eager to find out when The Young and the Restless will return with new episodes. Thanks to these massive layoff updates, it’d led some fans to wonder if Y&R will return at all! Things are definitely changing at CBS, so it’s concerning to hear about so many lost jobs.

However, it’s worth mentioning that the first round of ViacomCBS cuts came soon after the merger closed according to Deadline. That was back in December. February and March brought the number of layoffs to about 100. The pandemic left them pressing the pause button briefly, but then more layoffs came in the cable divisions.

In other words, the merger itself is responsible for a great deal of the changes, but the COVID-19 drama hasn’t helped matters. There’s a lot of cutting and rearranging going on, so it’s something to keep in mind.

For now, it’s best to stay optimistic about The Young and the Restless’ future. Let’s just hope that renewal sticks and look forward to the CBS soap’s comeback!
