Tonight’s episode begins with Andy wanting a divorce. It took her ten months to realize it. She came to the decision after it dawned on her that she was only staying married to Sullivan because it’s what her father would have wanted and not what she wants. She doesn’t want to stay married to a man she doesn’t respect. She doesn’t respect Sullivan and she stopped respecting him after he turned on his captain in the hopes of a promotion. A promotion that he didn’t get by the way. He took a huge risk thinking it would be for his career and he got nothing. He actually got worse than nothing. He’s now getting a divorce. Sullivan was served at the firehouse. The team saw it happened and they now know about the divorce as well.

Sullivan went into a mood because of it. He was angry and he still didn’t see how he was wrong. He thought the divorce was happening because of his addiction. He blamed his addiction for being the reason why he was demoted to a grunt and he thinks Andy would respect him if he was higher up in the Seattle Fire Department. He spoke to his sponsor about it. His sponsor warned him not to use this chance as a reason to get high and he also added that Andy doesn’t have to stay with him now that he’s sober. Sullivan also can’t use his marriage as the reason why he’s staying clean. He has to be clean because he wants to and he has to respect Andy’s feelings about the divorce. She may be his wife, but she ghosted him for ten months and so was the divorce really a surprise?

Sullivan tried calling Andy after he had been served. He wanted her to change her mind and she wasn’t going to. Not this time. Andy has made excuses for Sullivan before and it never works out for her. She’s always believed him. He on the other hand couldn’t say the same. He passed Andy over for her own promotion to captain because her best friend died and he didn’t think she was mentally fit to take on the role. Andy had been the most senior. She had the most experience. She proved able to handle herself and still, she forgave him for what he did and she even went on to marry him. They got married in haste because Andy wanted her father to witness the marriage and he was dying from cancer. And so who knows?

If Andy’s father hadn’t been dying, Andy and Sullivan would have taken their time. They would have seen where the relationship was going before making any big decisions and they might not have gotten married at all. They were barely married when Sullivan entered rehab. They then couldn’t be together while he was undergoing the program because the program asks for a full cleanse from everything as people get their heads right and only after Sullivan had moved on into the program that he was allowed to be with Andy. They spent most of the marriage not together. Their marriage was therefore never conventional and it wasn’t surprising that it was now ending. It was just Sullivan who couldn’t see it or accept it. Sullivan and the others later responded to a fire. The fire was in the basement.

The team responded to it. The only ones who weren’t there were Miller and Vic. They were doing their Crisis One program. It’s something Miller created after she won his lawsuit from the city for wrongful arrest and he was finally putting it into action. It’s when firefighters respond to mental health calls. Miller thought it would be better if the firefighters did it because they weren’t armed and they were trained in situations to de-escalate. Something the police are not. The police sometimes ended up shooting the people they’re called in to help or were told were suicidal and so having someone there who doesn’t have a gun was a big help. Miller and Vic and Emmett who trained as social workers had come across a young woman named Alisha.

Alisha was having a mental breakdown. She was cut off from reality and so Emmett managed to get her to open the door and from there they were able to push their way and restrain her. Alisha was going to be taken to the hospital. She was going to get proper treatment and meanwhile the other firefighters were missing out on a wonderful moment. The fire they responded to was that of a drug lab. The materials were all fire and so that poisoned the air. They had gotten knocked out and would have died if Sullivan hadn’t gone in to save them all. Later, most of the team was high. They were all enjoying it while more firefighters were called to the scene and so Sullivan saw Andy. He didn’t talk to her. He didn’t try to turn this into a moment for them. He just let her be.

Andy didn’t even know that the papers had been served. Her lawyer told her he would warn her when it was going to happen and so she didn’t know Sullivan was served and she just watched him be a hero. Andy later defended him to some guy at her new firehouse. She said Sullivan is a great firefighter and the two ran into each other at the hospital as they were all being checked out. Andy had noticed that Sullivan got a new tattoo. She tried to talk to him about it and he called her out for serving him divorce papers in front of his whole team. He told her she couldn’t wait until he off-shifted. She didn’t have to embarrass him in front of everyone. And so Andy tried to tell him that she didn’t know about the papers.

But Sullivan wasn’t having it. He stormed off and now he’s refusing to talk to her. The two were no longer speaking and Maya and her new wife Carina were speaking too much. The two women discussed having kids. Maya thinks a baby would derail her career because then she would be viewed as a mom and not as a firefighter. Carina wants to support her only she doesn’t know how to.

The whole team went to the bar later for drinks and Sullivan went. He almost drank at the bar. He came close to ruining his sobriety and Andy meanwhile slept with his new captain.
