Fans of this actor need to hope that Ashland is playing to his Lockeness Monster persona. If not, then his demise seems inevitable.
Ashland has been shown alone in various scenes where he has been short of breath, light-headed, and nauseous. That implies he does have some health issue, which could be cancer.

Only the lowest of the low would lie about a terminal diagnosis. Sally Spectra (Courtney Hope) can attest to that, as she pulled that stunt on Wyatt Spencer (Darin Brooks) while living in Los Angeles, California, and before crossing over from The Bold and the Beautiful.
But would Ashland lie about something this serious and then stick to that stance? Plus, would the audience buy that he has been able to fool Victoria and Nate?
Just as Victoria decided to rationalize Ashland not telling her about his past, she could have chosen not to seek any confirmation of his disease.
But Nate is a doctor who has consulted with Ashland’s doctors. So, those professionals hold medical credentials and would all need to be on Ashland’s payroll if a lie is being perpetrated.
Young and the Restless Spoilers – Treatment In Peru Creates An Opening
Ashland could travel to Peru to explore the discussed experimental treatment option. A contact would inform Victoria that the treatment failed and Ashland expired. Some form of interference would be in place to prevent her and Nate from being present during the treatment.
Considering the volume of information Ashland has withheld can Victoria, Nate, or anyone in the audience definitively say that a faked death is not possible? No.
Ashland’s motive would involve a misguided attempt to protect his wife. It would be followed by a reveal that represented an incredible betrayal.
