It’s another exciting night of American Idol on ABC tonight with an all-new Sunday, March 28, 2022, season 5 episode 6 called “Hollywood Week: Genre Challenge” and we have your weekly American Idol recap below. On tonight’s American Idol season 5 episode 6 as per the ABC synopsis, “The search for the next superstar continues as “American Idol” kicks off its iconic Hollywood Week, with some of the most prolific alums in “Idol”’s 20-year history returning to mentor the contestants.

Mentors include Jordin Sparks, David Cook, Lauren Alaina, Ruben Studdard, Chayce Beckham, Lee DeWyze and Haley Reinhart. Fan favorites from auditions will then take the stage for the Genre Challenge to sing their hearts out and impress judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie in hopes of making it through to the next round.”

Tonight’s American Idol episode begins with over 100 people going to Hollywood from all walks of life. Some people who have never been on a plane before. They are brought to Hollywood to all the glitz and glamour. Hollywood week is where they get their first shot at the microphone. There are two rounds, the genre challenge and the duets, tonight is the genre challenge. Each contestant has identified the best genre that identifies them as an artist. They have Indie-Folk, Pop, Rock, R&B, Soul and Country. The singers choose their own genre and song and go ahead to ahead with singers who choose the same. Jordin Sparks, Haley Reinhart, Lauren Aliana, David Cook are there to lend a hand. Three platinum ticket winners get to skip the genre challenge and go right to the duets. The stakes have not been higher, the talent is off the chart.

The country genre is first and Lauren Alaina is mentoring.

Mike Parker is singing “Burning House,” by Cam. A standing ovation by Blake Shelton and Lionel Ritchie.
Kaylin Roberson is singing “Mercy” by Brett Young. A standing ovation by Katy Perry.
Olivia Faye is singing, “If It Hadn’t Been For Love,” by Adele.
Sarahbeth Taite is singing, “To Love Somebody,” by the Bee Gees.
Kelsie Dolin is singing, “Things A Man Oughta Know,” by Lainey Wilson. Her nerves almost got the best of her.
The judges have made their decisions.

Mike, Sarahbeth, Olivia, Kaylin and Kelsie make it through to the next round.

The next group of contestants are the R&B genre. Ruben Studdard will be mentoring.

Zareh is singing, “One And Only,” by Adele.
Tobias sang a lot of runs and it was hard to make out what he was actually singing. Ruben warned him, but he went ahead anyway with it. Lionel says he should have dialed it back.
Katyrah Love is singing, “Saving All My Love For You,” by Whitney Houston.
The judges have decided to Keep Katyrah and Tobias.

The Indie-Folk group is up and Lee Dewyze is mentoring.

Leah Marlene is singing “Sk8er Boy,” by Avril Lavigne.
Brief snippets are shown of other Indie-Folk artist with commentary by Lionel.
Fritz performs “Unsteady” by X Ambassadors.
The judges choose Leah and Fritz to move forward to the next round.
The soul round is up and Hailey Reinhart is mentoring.
Danielle Finn is singing, “Easy On Me,” by Adele.
Christian Guardino is singing, “My Future,” by Billie Eilish and his nerves are really getting to him. He wants to show confidence this time on stage.

Danielle and Christian make it to the next round.

The rock genre is being mentored by David Cook.

Cole Hallman is back, but not with his little sister this time who was with him during the audition. He is singing, “Vienna” by Billy Joel.
He makes it through to the next round.
Pop genre is next and will be mentored by Jordin Sparks.
Morgan Gruber sings, “Anyone” by Demi Lovato.
Emyrson Flora sings, “Love In The Dark,” by Adele.
Both girls make it through to the next round with others.

More from the country genre and Chayce Beckham is mentoring this group.

Ryleigh Madison is singing, “Crazy,” by Patsy Cline.
Noah Thompson is singing, “Burning House,” by Cam. Back in the auditions Katy called him the American dream.
All the performers in this round are going forward.

Jordin Sparks is mentoring the next group of pop contestants.
Sir Blayke is singing, “True Colors,” by Phil Collins.
Ava Maybee is singing, “Roxanne,” by The Police. Her father is the drummer for the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.
Sam Finelli is singing, “Say Something,” by A Great Big World.”

Jenna, Sir Blayke and Ava make it through to the next round. Sam is sent home, Lionel tells him that the time is not yet now.

The second round of soul begins with Kevin Gullage who is having problems at the beginning of his performance, but comes through.
Cadence Baker is singing, “First Heartbreak,” by Tori Kelly.
Tristen Grussett is singing, “Try Me,” by James Brown.
The three make it to the next round with their lineup.

We get a glimpse of some of the artists who make it through to the next round; Taylor Fagins, Lady K., Betty Maxwell, Elli Rowe, Sam Moss, Haley Slaton, Allegra Miles, Dakota Hayden.
The last group of the night is from the pop genre.
Jacob Moran is singing, “Mace Me Cry,” by Noah Cyrus.
Danielle Clavell is singing, “I’ll Never Love Again,” by Lady Gaga.
Nicolina is singing, “Everything I Wanted,” by Billie Eilish.

The judges have decided that Jacob and Douglas make it through, so do the girls.
