Tonight’s American Idol episode begins with Ryan Seacrest saying be ready for a twist that nobody could see coming. Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Ritchie are welcomed to the judging panel. This week each finalist was given three songs to choose from, one from each judge. The catch, they don’t know who chose the song. Two people are headed home tonight based on America’s votes.

Nicole has chosen to sing “Since U Been Gone,” by Kelly Clarkson. Nicolina thinks Katy Perry choose that song, but she didn’t. It was Lionel Ritchie.

Judges Comments: Lionel: “I wanted fire from you, we know you can stand still and blow the whole room away. But can you make the stage presence, yes you can, you lifted the room.” Luke: “Lionel is right, we haven’t seen you in that high energy, it was fun seeing you in that light and head bang a little bit.” Katy: “If you can sing as good as Kelly Clarkson and put your spin on it, great.”

Mike Parker sings “Chasin’ You” by Morgan Wallen. Mike thinks Luke choose the song, he is right.

Judges Comments: Luke: “You did a great job, I like that you did your own thing with it. Especially your choices at the end, the falsettos.” Lionel: “I love that you made it your song, you were crooning and I love the vibe.” Katy: “Just perfect at the end, I miss your cowboy hat.”

Fritz Hager sings “Wonderwall,” by Oasis. Fritz thinks Katy picked the song, he could see her jamming to Oasis. No, it wasn’t her, she chose a Beach Boys song. It was Luke.

Judges Comments: Luke: “Great job.” Lionel: “The song was delivered perfectly.” Katy: “Wonderwall can get a little jammy, you flipped it on its head, brilliant.”

Christian Guardino Choose to sing, “For Once In My Life,” by Stevie Wonder, but then chooses “”I’m Not The Only One,” by Sam Smith. Christian thinks it is Luke that choose the song, but it is Katy.

Judges Comments: Katy: “You command in the beginning and then ham in the end.” Luke: “Anything that you don’t do perfectly right is because you are nervous. But everything you do right is because you are amazing. You need to drop the mic next time and command the stage.” Lionel: “You are so special, you turned Sam’s song into your song, the whole vibe was fabulous.”

Noah Thompson choose to sing, “Take Me Home, Country Roads” by John Denver, then changes his mind and decides to be a little risky with “Heartbreak Warefare,” by John Mayer that he never heard before. Noah thinks Katy choose the song, but she choose the John Denver song. It was Luke who choose the song.

Judges Comments: Luke: “Nothing is more challenging that to try and learn a song so quickly. It was done really well, I am happy you challenged yourself.” Lionel: “You controlled it, I love how you are growing and stepping in that place of your career.” Katy: “You sounded great, it is brilliant that you are challenging yourself in the moment.”

Lady K chooses “Jesus Take The Wheel,” by Carrie Underwood, but that would be playing it safe, so she decides to do “Traitor,” by Olivia Rodrigo to step outside the box. Lady K thinks Katy picked this one, but she didn’t. Lionel actually picked the song.

Judges Comments: Lionel: “I knew that song was different, outside he box, to challenge you and you won. The performance was stellar.” Katy: “I think it was cool, you did a good job, you look gorgeous. A good song.” Luke: “I wanted Jesus take the wheel, anything we are seeing tonight, you did a good job.”

Huntergirl chooses to sing “9 to 5,” by Dolly Parton, she hopes she can hit some notes she never has before. Huntergirl thinks Lionel picked this song, but he didn’t, it was Luke.

Judges Comments: Lionel: “Your performance was absolutely amazing.” Katy: “You took my advice about stage presence, that was great, there was more sparkle, you embody Dolly.”

Leah Marlene choose to sing “Make You Feel My Love,” by Bob Dylan and she thinks Katy choose the song, and she did.

Judges Comments: Katy: “That was a Picasso, everyone was zoned into you, you are so beautiful when you sing it is angelic.” Luke: “You embody so many classic singers.” Lionel: “When you go to amateur to the artist of who you are, that is what you did tonight.”

Tristen Gressett chooses to sing “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” by The Rolling Stones and he thinks Lionel picked it and he did.

Judges Comments: Lionel: “He gave me Mick Jagger on steroids. You have a show stopping performance.” Katy: “That is electricity in a bottle, amazing.” Luke: “Your whole deal works for what you are, then you throw a cape on and it was rhythmic gymnastics.”

Emyrson Flora chooses to sing “Lovely,” by Billie Eilish feat Khalid and she is sure that she thinks Katy choose it and she did.

Judges Comments: Katy: “Never run from who you are and you do have a great little Billy Eilish tone.” Luke: “Everything you do on stage you are a pro at such a young age.” Lionel: “That was just an all around perfect performance.”

Jay chooses to sing “Lilac Wine,” by Jeff Buckley and he thinks Katy choose the song and she did.

Judges Comments: Katy: “That was your best performance yet in my opinion, it was controlled, showing off your artistry you did it.” Luke: “You just learned that, and it was like Nat King Cole reborn in front of my eyes, it was classically beautiful.” Lionel: “I would admit that was one of the greatest performances I have seen in my life.”

Time for results.

Made it through to the top ten: Noah, Christian, Fritz, Nicolina, Huntergirl, Emyrson, Leah, Jay, Mike.

The bottom two: Lady K. and Tristen.

Since Katy and Luke are the winners of the Judges Song Contest, they get to save one and they choose Lady K.

Tristen is going home.
