In tonight’s Chicago PD episode, Sean O’Neal was guilty of many things. He was guilty of human trafficking. He was guilty of murder. He was just a bad guy in general. But Voight couldn’t prove any of it at first. He had his people look into Sean. They ran an off-the-books investigation into Sean because Sean’s father was Voight’s boss. They didn’t want Chief O’Neal to know they were looking into his son. The chief may have suspected his son was still a suspect only he couldn’t prove it and so the first he heard about this secret investigation was when Voight’s team found a burial site at his family’s old cabin. It turns out Sean buried a thirteen-year-old girl and thereafter strangled her.
They knew Sean was guilty because the person who buried the girl had also covered his tracks. He knew what the forensics team was looking for and so he drenched the remains in bleach and lye to destroy any evidence that might have been left on the body. He destroyed all of the evidence. He just couldn’t hide the fact that the poor girl was strangled. But they knew it was he who did this. It was his family cabin. He constantly returned there even after his father practically abandoned the place. Sean also made sure that all of his rehab stints were done up there. He wanted to be close to that teenage scene.
Sean would have been seventeen when the girl was murdered. It means he started his killing spree young and he wasn’t done. He won’t be done until he’s stopped. Upton later found a witness who went to Sean’s center. This girl went to the center for at-risk teenagers to get help and Sean took advantage of that. He gave this girl counseling. He made it seem like he could be a friend to her. Then one day that all changed. He took the girl to the woods where he raped her. He also drugged her and the next time she woke up was in a locked room. There were other girls there. They warned her that she would be sold.
This girl was washed. She was transported. But she ran the moment she had an opportunity and she’s been on the run ever since. She changes her name every couple of months. It took Torres finding her for her to be questioned. She was questioned. She told her story under the terms that she wouldn’t have to testify. Which was a problem. Their victim was the only direct tie to Sean. They didn’t have a case without her and yet they couldn’t use her. It frustrated Upton. She knew Sean was guilty. She knew that Sean was a pedophile. He’s been attracted to kids ever since he was one himself. And so proving it should have been easy.
But it wasn’t. Not when Chief O’Neal did everything possible to make sure his son wasn’t arrested. He even got Sean a lawyer without Sean asking for one. He also pressured the District Attorney’s office to drop all charges against Sean even as the evidence against him was adding up. Sean was in contact with a low-level pimp back in the day. Back before he got better at hiding his tendencies. The pimp was a known transporter. Voight and his team went to the transporter’s home. They arrested him. They questioned him. And he gave them an address that ultimately was deserted because Sean had already warned his people
Sean and his father were doing everything they could to bury what happened. The chief didn’t bother to look at the evidence. He was so frightened that his son could be a monster that the only way forward for him was denial. After Sean was released, Voight visited the chief’s home. He handed over the file of all the evidence they collected against Sean. He demanded that the chief at least read it. He wanted him to see that Sean was a monster and so Voight left the chief drinking a scotch while he and his team followed a lead. They knew they were late to the house to rescue the girls. And so all they had to do was follow the girls’ van from that house.
They used street cameras to follow the van to a bunch of warehouses. The whole team got called out to the location and they swarmed the area looking for those girls. Upton got separated from the others. She found the transport truck. She couldn’t radio for backup because she didn’t have a reception in the basement. But she still pursued the lead by herself. She took an unhealthy risk and she’s lucky Voight showed up in time to help her. Together they found the girls in the abandoned truck. The girls had been left to die, but they were saved and the team finally had concrete evidence against Sean.
Voight and Upton went to go arrest Sean when they found the scene. Sean had been shot by his father. Chief O’Neal also killed himself once he thought he murdered his son and he had been wrong. Sean was still alive when Voight found him. Voight called for an ambulance. He also administered first aid to Sean to keep him alive until the ambulance arrived. And so he and Upton saved Sean’s life.
And the fact that Upton wanted to leave him to die was just a secret between her and Voight.
