Jaeger was promoted after she took down Smit. She now gets an office job. She can also choose her replacement. Making the next case be her last case with Forrester’s team. Someone used a rocket launcher to take down a private plane. Everyone on board was killed. There was another person scheduled to take that flight and the authorities were left with questions about why he missed that flight. But this case went to the FBI because of the victim involved. The person who owned the plane was Hutchinson as in the Hutchinson in Hutchinson file that Forrester was asked to steal for his mother. He never did so. He didn’t want to betray his country.

Forrester instead reported the interaction with his bosses. They created a sting operation to capture his mother. Forrester therefore never got close enough to the real file to see what it said about Hutchinson. He had no idea what Hutchinson did for the United States or why he was important. He was just told his plane was shot down. Forrester was going to investigate this as he did with anything else and instead he had both the United States and his mom wanting updates on the case. His mother reached out to him after months of no contact. The last time they saw each, Forrester had been warning her against showing herself because he had been followed.

But now Forrester has questions. He wanted to know why Hutchinson was so important. His side wouldn’t give him the answer to that and neither would his mother. They were instead focusing on who else was supposed to take that flight. The man who got the lucky escape. Paul Novikoff. Novikoff was in charge of all spy operations in Russia. He was even the name who supposedly turned Forrester’s mother and helped her to betray the Americans. Novikoff disappeared after he failed to make the flight. He went to the ground because there was a chance the assassins were after him and if they were after him it was because he was thinking of defecting from Russia.

Or that’s what Forrester’s mom was claiming. Angela claims she never became a traitor. She said she was still working for the Americans and that Novikoff was willing to join them. He just wanted the reassurance of safety first. Forrester chose to believe this story because it was his mom telling it and so Forrester went off the book. He left his team in Budapest. He didn’t tell them where he was going. He simply told them that he was going after Novikoff and that he was chasing intel. His bosses hadn’t liked hearing that because they thought Forrester was committing treason by talking to his mom. And so a friend from the CIA went after him.

They wanted to keep him safe. They allowed themselves to be seen in the hope that Forrester would confront them. He did. He told his friend that he had to do this and the friend was doing his best to dissuade him when he got shot. The assassins after Novikoff had shown up. They would have killed Forrester too if Jaeger’s fellow Europol officer hadn’t shown up. The officer gave Forrester a ride. He later met with Novikoff who revealed he wanted to abandon Russia. He began feeling that now was the time because he hated the war in Ukraine and he wanted no part in the atrocities happening.

Novikoff said he expressed his doubts to Angela. Angela then revealed she was under deep cover. How she still works for the United States and so Angela agreed to help Novikoff defect. She told him that her son could help him. Novikoff tried leaving on his own. He missed his doomed flight because he got a flat tire and he didn’t want to take any more risks. But he chose to believe in Forrester. Forrester called in his team after he got Novikoff. He asked them to arrange an extract mission. They sent people to wait at a private airport. Forrester headed there with Novikoff. And they ran into some trouble on the way there.

They ran into the assassins. Forrester and Europol had to do their best to fight off the assassins and Novikoff was injured because he broke his arm in a car crash. So, Forrester had to do most of the fighting. He was almost close to the airport when Novikoff tells him that Angela has had a change of heart. She now wants to go with them. Forrester was tempted to turn back for his mom only the assassins kept coming and so he had to focus on Novikoff. He got him to the airport when Novikoff got another message from Forrester’s mom. This time she claims she’s been compromised and that she can’t get in touch for a while. She has to go dark.

Forrester was angry he couldn’t go back for his mom. They had just gotten into contact after years of no word and now he’ll lose her again. Forrester later received one call from his mom in which she said this was goodbye and told him to give up on her, but it’s his mom and he’ll never fully give up on her. And he has so many questions after seeing men moving to detain her before she ended the call.

He doesn’t know if she was safe and he wasn’t safe either because the assassin was still following him.
