The top eighteen faced their first team challenge of the season. The contestants have more experience now than they had before in their prior season and so they “should” have been able to knock this one out of the park. Should! It’s all in that single word and sadly many didn’t rise to the challenge. The contestants were split into two teams depending on which season they previously competed in. They also decided on their own team captain. The Blue Team elected Christian to be their team captain. The Red Team elected Alejandro to be their team captain. Both teams were going to cook for the US Coast Guard.

It was the first time that they prepped for this particular branch of the military. They should all want the best for them because they serve our country. Yet right away, Christian showed he could be a dictator for his team. He didn’t want to hear ideas on what they could cook. He decided it for the rest of them. He didn’t take anyone else’s ideas. He also spoke over them and so right away he was being a dictator. Which could go either way in a kitchen. Some might like the strong leadership and excel if they were told exactly what to do while others could rebel against such strong opposition.

Alejandro displayed a different kind of leadership. He did his best to listen to the people he assigned to each station. If they came up with something that he liked, he’d tell them to do it. Alejandro was perhaps too chilled in the kitchen. His team committed mistakes that should never have been allowed in any kitchen and so Chef Ramsay had to tell him to get loud. There were people on his team that was failing to salt their ingredients. They had to be told to fix that. Alejandro couldn’t tell them like a friend. He had to order them like a boss. And over in the Blue kitchen, Brandi had to remind Christian that she couldn’t work with someone yelling at her.

She needed to talk not be yelled at. They came up with a mock plate for the judges to taste. The judges said it was too sweet. There needed to be spice thrown in there. This is what someone suggested to Christian at the beginning. Christian took the judges’ opinions and he rearranged things in his kitchen. Alejandro’s team came up with their own mock plate for the judges. The judges said the steak was rare as well as bland. The only thing working for the plate had been the sauce. The sauce tasted great. Everything else was bland. Alejandro took that criticism and thought he should take over the meat station.

Alejandro was the same guy who put a rare steak on the mock plate yet he thought he could handle that station all by himself. He went on to try and deliver several undercooked steaks. Chef Ramsay had to send them back into the kitchen. He then yelled at the Red Team and demanded that Alejandro get his kitchen under control. Chef Ramsay also had to yell at the Blue Team. The Blue Team had delivered on the protein only for Derrick to hold up on the potatoes. The rest of the food was getting cold while they waited on Derrick to finally deliver. And so Shelly went over there to help him.

The Blue Team also got called out for their asparagus being too big. They hadn’t cut off the root properly and so they were told to fix it. Over in the Red kitchen, Alejandro had completely given up on leadership. He stayed focused on the meat and he didn’t try to guide his team. It was Michael and Shaniqua who rose up to handle that kitchen. If it hadn’t been for them, the Red kitchen would have been a disaster. It was already a disaster with Alejandro’s station. He dropped a tray of meat on the floor. Gabe thought they should toss it. Alejandro told him that it would be fine and he then put them on the grill.

Chef Ramsay saw this. He called Alejandro and Gabe to the side. He yelled at both. He asked why they did that and Alejandro said he thought the grill would kill the bacteria. Chef Ramsay was so stunned that he fired Alejandro as leader of the Red kitchen. He demanded that they hold another meeting. They did and at that time they elected Michael. Michael stepped up. He commanded the kitchen and it was just successful from there. The Blue team later got yelled at for delivering a raw fish and so they course-corrected. And ultimately they were able to finish their dinner service on a high note.

Both teams did their best. They created dishes that the servicemen and women enjoyed. But there could only be one winner. The winner of the team challenge was the Blue Team. The Red Team lost. Someone from their team had to be eliminated. Naturally, it had to be Alejandro. He failed as a team captain. He also tried to serve food off the floor and that was a big no-no.

And so goodbye, Alejandro!

THE END!
