In tonight’s American Ninja Warrior episode, with just a few weeks in, it was already clear how much the younger generation were dominating. They’ve often been the only finishers of the night and all the while the veterans were falling behind. Up first was the Ninja Cop. John Uga was twenty-five. He was from Massachusetts. He was older than the typical rookie this season but being older doesn’t automatically mean he was wiser. John fell on the third obstacle. It was the Getaway. It was designed around a bank heist. And so of course a cop would flunk out on it.

Next up was Jonathan Godbout. He was eighteen. He was in a heavy metal band. He said playing up onstage was its own workout and it must be because he ran an Ironman triathlon. He was also a veteran. He started out Ninja Junior before jumping into the big leagues. Tonight he became the first to make it past the Getaway. He became the first to make it pass Lasso Launch. He even became the first finisher of the night after he conquered the Warped Wall to hit a buzzer and that right there just proves how much the teenagers were really dominating this season.

But can they go up against the legends? There was the Papal Ninja. There was the Superhero Ninja. There was also the Weatherman Ninja. These guys were all legends in this field. Everyone believed they would wipe the floor with these young guns only the teenagers were proving to be fierce competitors. Take Josiah Pippel. He was a New Jersey teenager that made it as far as Stage Four last season. He was a veteran, albeit a young veteran. He was just a kid. And he was known for speed because he barely lets himself rest on the course.

Josiah flew through the whole thing. He was hoping to get the fastest time. He unfortunately was late by forty-five seconds and so he missed out on the chance of the Mega Warped Wall while also becoming the second finisher of the night. Next up was Michelle Warnky Buurma. The female veteran was back after having a baby. Not only did she have a baby. She had a preemie. Her daughter Grace was born at twenty-seven weeks. She had to stay in the NICU. Her parents couldn’t really see her face what with all the wires that were coming out of her.

They eventually saw Grace’s face after two months. Grace soon got to leave the hospital and she’s now watching from the sidelines on ANW. Her mother however hasn’t been training like she normally wound have since having a baby. She was focusing on her family and muscle memory can only get you so far. Michelle fell on the balance obstacle. She later said that she’s heavier on her feet now. She just needs to get back to training. And in the meantime, Hollywood Visual Effects Artist Daniel Novarro got to get his run.

Daniel worked on Steven Spielberg’s “Westside Story”. Two of the stars from the movie even wished him luck right before his run. Only Daniel’s luck was in poor form tonight. He hit himself in the face on the first obstacle. The Pole Vaulter. He went on to fall on the balance obstacle. It seems he needed a little more practice before he tried to compete with legends like Jamie Rahn. Rahn had his run next. He was known as the Superhero Ninja. He had his own cape. He also had a reason to celebrate because his baby son recently turned one.

Jamie and his wife had a baby after years of trying. Their son was born on the 4th of July last year. He now was wearing a green fuzzy hat to match his dad’s hair and he watched as Jamie fell during the first time on Qualifiers. Jamie has been a long-time veteran. He has never fallen during Qualifiers until now. Proving that paternity leave could be just as devastating as maternity leave. Jamie has to wait and see if he’ll make it into the next round. Next up meanwhile was Rachel Degutz. She was one of the Jersey Girls.

The Jersey Girls were the leading female ninjas out of New Jersey. Rachel has been one of the founding mothers of the organization. She also looked close to becoming the first woman finisher of the night when suddenly she fell on Lasso Launch. It was the fifth obstacle. Odds are she’ll make it into the next round, but she would have liked to have gotten a buzzer tonight. After Rachel had her run, it was Nick Roalef’s turn. He was the Ninja Nick. He was a janitor back home and he was an amazing ninja on the course.

Tonight just wasn’t his night because Ninja Nick fell on the balance obstacle. The veterans simply were not at their best tonight. All except for the Papal Ninja. Sean Bryan has God on his side when he went next. He just got his pilot license. He has been flying all around and his new love of flying didn’t deter him from his ninja training. Sean remains just as legendary as before. He raced through the course. He finished with the fastest time. He also qualified for the Mega Warped Wall. And sadly Sean missed out on the extra ten grand but it wasn’t his fault.

They did raise that wall by six inches since last year.

The Weatherman went next. Joe Moravsky wanted that Mega Warped Wall. He has twenty-eight buzzers in his ninja career. The most any ninja has ever won on ANW and so he was the best of the best. He was the one to beat, but he missed out on a buzzer tonight by going too fast. He fell on Lasso Launch. And while his time is good enough to get him into the next round, he would have liked to have gotten a buzzer and to prove the veterans still got it.

And in the Runoffs, the men’s winner was John Uga while the women’s winner was Brittney Durant.

THE END!
