Tonight’s episode begins with Detective Adam Ruzek who was enjoying the day off with Makayla when he got a call. The call was from a friend of his who himself a fellow cop. Jerry said that he wanted his help with something and so Ruzek left his daughter with Atwater while he went to go check it out. Ruzek went to Jerry’s crime scene, but he was able to piece together what happened fairly quickly. Ruzek saw a whole family had died. There was no fire or signs of distress. The cops were mystified about how they died. They just died where they stood and so it was Ruzek who realized that they died from smoke inhalation because someone was cooking meth on the floor below them.

The floor below them was an abandoned storefront. Someone used the fact that it was abandoned to set up a meth shop there. They moved once they saw the police come by. Yet, they didn’t scrub their presence from nearby surveillance cameras. Samantha Beck was seen entering the building. Samantha was a woman that Intelligence saved after she had been abducted. Samantha was held for a million dollar ransom that her father claimed he couldn’t pay. Samantha was later rescued after all of her abductors had died. And so she thought she got away with her secret life.

Intelligence on the other hand never got over why she had been taken. Samantha claims to be working for her father at his business and it turns out Richard Beck has several offshore accounts. He could easily have paid the ransom. He just chose not to because he was willing to sacrifice his own daughter in order to maintain his cover. Richard and Samantha were in the drug business. They cooked and sold meth. Richard ran things while Samantha took all the risks. Samantha was seen entering drug dens. She was the one meeting with buyers.

Samantha even switches cars regularly in the hope of losing anyone who might be following her. She was good. She just wasn’t good enough to hide from Voight’s unit. Voight’s people got called in the moment Ruzek took over the murder case and they were the ones who found the Samantha connections. They had enough to arrest Samantha on conspiracy, but they wanted to get her father as well. Richard was even better at selling meth than Samantha. Those two didn’t talk at his legitimate business. Samantha was still angry he was going to let those men kill her.

Except Samantha wanted a chance to be taken seriously. It was therefore great when Ruzek introduced himself by saving her life. Samantha had never met Ruzek before when the cops rescued her and so he was the perfect man to go undercover. Ruzek moved fast in developing a bond with Samantha. He even developed a bond with her son, Callum. Ruzek soon got introduced to Richard. Samantha wanted to bring Ruzek into the fold. She wanted him to work at the shipyard because she saw potential in him.

Samantha pushed her father into testing Ruzek. Richard had Ruzek go collect money for him from some drug dealers and, while it did get dicey, Ruzek maintained his cover. He got the money for Richard. He proved himself to Samantha. Samantha had stopped by his place to tell him to come to the shipyard the next morning when suddenly she found something hidden in her son’s bag. Whatever she found must have infuriated her because she took the bag and she drove crazily to her father’s place to confront her dad.

Ruzek didn’t hear what she said. He just saw her dump things from her son’s bag into the nearby trashcan and so he went looking through the trash. He found some Neo-Nazi comic books. He also found a Hitler Youth knife. It turns out Richard a racist. He scrubbed his social media about ten years ago, but before that he was following all the racist agenda he could find and he wanted to teach that to his family. He taught it to his daughter. He’s now teaching it to his son and Samantha was against that idea.

Samantha didn’t want her son to be a Nazi like her father. She was trying to steer him away from that and that resonates with Ruzek. Ruzek talked to Burgess about it. He wanted to know if there was a way they could protect Samantha when they bring down the business. Burgess didn’t think that was possible because Samantha was too involved in the business. Ruzek then dropped the matter. Only he was still a little too approachable for Samantha. Ruzek later got a chance to make a drug run. He missed that chance because Samantha called him in a panic and he went running to her aide.

Samantha couldn’t find her son, but he was hiding in the basement and was just a little sad he couldn’t see his grandpa anymore. Ruzek missed his big chance to prove himself to Richard by letting someone else take over from him. The cops still followed the car he was supposed to drive and that too turned out to be a test. Richard was too smart to let Ruzek see a big drug trade that new in the game. And so for now, Ruzek had to continue building up trust.
