NCIS: ORIGINS Recap 12/02/24: Season 1 Episode 8 “Sick as Our Secrets”

Special Agent Bernard Randolf suffered from PTSD. He would smoke to calm down. Or at least he used to do until he had a new baby at home. His new baby had colic. Randy didn’t want to make it worse by bringing in cigarette smoke and so he was going without cigarettes. He had nothing else to calm him down. He was going around by pretending to be cheerful and he knew it wasn’t going to last. He was going to snap. One way or another. It probably didn’t help that they caught a murder case. NCIS was informed that Father John Larkin had been murdered at his church. The father was a Navy Chaplin. NCIS had to investigate his case like any other soldier. They learned that the father was giving confessional when he was killed and that there was a missing priest. The other priest was Father Bobby. Father Bobby was hiding in the private office saying his “hail Mary” over and over again. The man also had blood on him. He seemed pretty shaken and NCIS had to question him in case he saw something or was their culprit. They took Father Bobby back to their office. The father calmed down when he away from the crime scene. He apologized for his earlier behavior. He said he was shaken when he saw Father John in such a condition. He was also freaking out because he was worried that the killer might have made a mistake. It was Father Bobby’s turn to be in the box this week. He traded with Father John. The other priest was also shot first in the confessional. He tried crawling away when he got shot the second time and it was the second bullet that killed him. Meaning the killer never got a good look at Father John’s face. They could have thought they were aiming at Father Bobby. Which of course worried Father Bobby. NCIS had to give him protection detail. Randy signed up for it. He’s been signing up for these kinds of jobs for the past few weeks. Mary Jo suspected he didn’t want to go home. Franks thought that Randy wanted to be away from a baby with colic. He assigned Gibbs to go with Randy in case Randy fell asleep on the job. And assigning Gibbs might have been a mistake.

Gibbs was already all over the place. When he joined Randy in covering for Father Bobby, he saw Randy go through every scenario and he questioned out loud if Agent Mitchell had done the same.

Mitchell was the man guarding Gibb’s family when they were all killed. Randy didn’t know Mitchell for long, but he did see the crime scene. He saw the blood everywhere. It stayed with him. He blamed himself for what happened and that’s when he first began to spiral. Randy puts on a good show in front of his coworkers. His wife was the only one that knew he was suffering.

Father Bobby also proved to be right. He was the target all along. The gun used to murder Father John was used in a convenience store robbery and the clerk was killed. The killer has now killed two people.

Father Bobby knows who he is and he can’t say. The killer confessed to him during confession. Father Bobby was tied by the sacramental seal. He couldn’t reveal this man’s name. The killer was coming after him and he couldn’t even give the feds any information to protect himself. He either survives or he dies with the secret.

Someone tripped the fire alarm at the motel where NCIS was staying with Father Bobby. Randy went out to go check. He found someone running away and identified himself as a federal agent.

The two men got into a scuffle. Randy nearly killed the guy in a chokehold. He finally put the guy to sleep when Gibbs radio in that someone was trying to break into the priest’s room. Gibbs arrested the other guy. He and Randy later questioned both men. They saw the feds unloading stuff and they wanted to rob them. They didn’t know they were feds or that they were guarding a priest.

They did see the priest though. Father Bobby came out of the room to look at them. He assured Randy that neither of them was his killer and the two men weren’t armed.

The thieves were transported to the local jail. Franks decided to let the priest stay at the motel. He sent Randy some backup. Randy needed it after Gibbs left. Gibbs had to leave to put the thieves in lockup. With Gibbs gone, Randy made a confession to Father Bobby. He admitted he was assigned protection detail over Gibbs’s family.

Randy ended up passing on it because his son really did have colic at the time. The baby was keeping them awake at all hours of the day and they were worried that there might be something seriously wrong with him. Randy had to stay to be with his family. He gave Mitchell his assignment. Now Mitchell is dead. Gibbs’s family is dead.

Randy has been blaming himself for what happened and its why he takes so many assignments away from home. He couldn’t stand to look at his son. His boy reminded him of everything he wanted to forget.

Randy struggling to connect with his son had touched Father Bobby. Father Bobby traded with Father John because he was having an emotional affair with one of his parishioners. He now blames himself for his fellow priest’s death. He failed that vow and he didn’t want to fail any others. Only he got a sign from someone in the NCIS office.

It helped make things clear for Father Bobby. He gave up the killer’s name. His name was Joshua Adams. He was the son of the congregation secretary. Joshua struggles with drugs and alcohol. And he used his grandfather’s service weapon to rob the convenience store.

Joshua killed two people to get a fix. NCIS even found him in the underground tunnels doing drugs. There was no saving him. The only good thing that came out of it was Lala got an answer.

She approached Franks earlier. She was hoping to get recommendation letter from Franks. Lala wants to move up through the ranks of NCIS’s command and leadership. And Franks refused to sign that letter because he thought Lala was better off in the field than in an office like Vera.

The same Vera that was questioning Jamison in prison. He goes by Bugs now and he was a bad guy. He was so bad that Vera shouldn’t have kept their interview a secret.

THE END!
