The new guy tried to help his old man. He found evidence that could get his father early parole. He visited Ramon Vasquez in prison and his dad didn’t want early parole. He wanted things to return to the way they were. With him back on the force. He didn’t care that he broke the law. He wanted back on the force and he mocked his son for his early parole idea. He even said if he followed orders that maybe he wouldn’t bounce from every firehouse in Chicago. Sal was genuinely hurt by that. He cut their visit early. He also hasn’t been taking any of his father’s subsequent calls.

He’s been focusing on work. Pascal was still out. Severide was in charge and there was a huge structural fire at the start of tonight’s episode. Something weird happened at the scene. Cruz was clearing the building with his crew when he ran into an old man. The old man had a oxygen tank with him. He told Cruz not to worry about him and to focus on someone that does need his help. Cruz got someone else out of the smoking building. He came outside and he couldn’t find the old man that helped him.

Nor did anyone else see this old man. His crew cleared the building. Severide didn’t spot the guy and the same for the paramedics. Severide still offered to get Violet to check at the hospital. Just in case Cruz’s friend grabbed a ride with another ambulance. Violet would later check and again no one else spotted this one man. It was just Cruz that saw him. It was Halloween and so this could be a ghost sighting. Speaking of the holiday, Novak was trying to convince everyone into going to a Costume Ball.

Novak has built some rapport with Vasquez. She tried to convince him to attend. It would be a great way to forget his problems and he needed that. Especially after his father called his firehouse. Ramon wasn’t taking the hint. He wanted his son to do something he wasn’t comfortable with. He was also bent on ruining things for his boy if Vasquez didn’t come through. Why else would he called the firehouse directly? He got Kidd and Kidd now knows that the probie’s dad was in prison. It’s something he hasn’t told anyone else.

It already cost him his future at the police academy. He didn’t want it costing him his future with the Chicago Fire Department as well. It’s got Kidd talking. Kidd recognized Ramon’s name. She talked about it with her husband. She remembered the case because it was plastered all over the news. This woman was killed by her deranged ex. There was a cop accused of planting evidence all over the scene against the ex. The cop was found out. He was sentenced to ten years and its been six. No wonder his son was talking about early parole over exoneration.

The end was in sight. The son didn’t want to hurt someone just to get his father out of prison. He was there serving time for something he did. It’s created all sorts of problems for Vasquez. He couldn’t believe his father was restarting all of that over again by calling his station. Vasquez thought he got lucky when another call came into the station. This man called saying he was in distressed. They didn’t know if it was a fire and so everyone rode out together. They found an abandoned car. They searched the nearby area for victims.

Kidd found the victim. Severide found the sign. The sign that said hazardous air. They all masked up. Kidd was too late and so she passed out. The paramedics were able to revive her. Her lungs were clear. She was getting oxygen by time the hazmat team finally showed up. The man she found wasn’t looking good. He was called out over a faulty door. He never got the chance to shield himself before he passed out. It’s a good thing Vasquez spotted the abandoned car. It got him time and if not for him then for his family to save goodbye.

Vasquez also checked up on Kidd. He was genuinely worried for her. She was going to be alright and she wanted to return the favor by checking up on him. She asked him if he wanted to talk about the call from his dad. He said he was good. He also reassured her that never was going to happen again. Vasquez was thinking about doing the favor his father asked. His father wanted the victim’s widower to testify at his parole hearing. He thinks it would get him released now rather than later. Only going to a widower who never received justice felt like crossing a line.

It’s why Vasquez didn’t do right off. He wanted to stick with his own idea. His father just wouldn’t listen to him because he believes he has to run the show. He wants the widower to testify on his behalf. Vasquez talked about it with a friend. He was going to turn it down. Not that his father cared. His father had pulled strings to keep Vasquez in CFD and now he was calling for a returned favor. Vasquez has no choice. He lost it at the police academy. He kept losing it as work because of his ties to his father. He couldn’t afford to tick off his old man or risk getting kicked out of the CFD.

He planned on speaking to the widower.

Mouch in the meantime came up with a way to help Herrmann and his family. They were going to have a pass the boot sorta charity fundraiser and it was happening on the same night as the costume ball that Novak was talking about. So, she convinced Mouch to let it be a costume fundraiser. This was the only way she could have the best of both worlds. It also kept things light and fun. Herrmann stopped by and he was truly touched by all the support.

And the man that Cruz saw had died years ago which meant he did see a ghost.

THE END
