In tonight’s Chicago PD episode, Detective Kim Burgess wanted the best for their daughter. She was considering moving her to a different school. It was still early in the year that the change wouldn’t affect Mac too badly. Only Mac was happy where she was. She liked her school. She liked her friends.
Burgess didn’t even ask if she wanted a change much less tell her husband about it before reaching out to a fancy private school. It was called Fairfield Park Academy. The truth is that Burgess wanted to change her daughter’s environment because she was worried about the influence her friends had on her.
Their neighborhood felt like a small town. Burgess wanted to give her daughter the chance to get out of it. Hopefully, have an even brighter future. She also wouldn’t mind in Mac never got into any trouble either. Their neighborhood wasn’t as safe as Ruzek liked to believe.
They saw a bunch of police cars responding to their neighborhood that same morning and Mac was the one that said which street they went to. Her friends were already talking about what happened. There was a body found of a teenage girl. She grew up a block from them.
Her name was Sasha King. The detectives knew her mother, Natalie. Sasha’s dad committed suicide a few years ago and Natalie has been drinking ever since.
They couldn’t help Sasha because she was officially an adult. She was nineteen at the time of her death. She was old enough to make decisions. This included staying with her mother. When the cops went to notify her, they were too late. The news had spread that it was Sasha. The neighbors all came around to help Natalie through this trying time.
There were still a few questions they had for Natalie. Ruzek spoke with her alone. He asked her about Sasha. How was holding up after her dad? Did she have a boyfriend or any problems with anyone? Sasha’s best friend was nearby and so she said that Sasha has been busy with the campaign mostly.
She was working at a campaign office for Greg Whitman. He was running for Governor. Sasha didn’t have any issues at the office. There was no one bothering her or so the friend claimed. Though Burgess did find that Sasha had a photo of herself with a young man hung up on her wall.
Looked like a boyfriend.
They wanted to know who the man was. His name was Tommy Walsh. His sister was Sasha’s best friend. The same friend that was still there and so she told them that Tommy and Sasha used to hook up. She thought it was over. The cops checked Sasha’s messages to see that it wasn’t. Tommy has been in and out of trouble. There was a charge against him for sexual misconduct that went away after the victim was deemed a bad witness. Tommy’s father was a cop. Voight had to ask if the father made the charges go away.
Ruzek didn’t think he did. He said Frank Walsh was good police. He would never dishonor the badge to protect his son. All the same, Voight asked them to quietly bring in Tommy for questioning. Tommy was the one that made it hard for himself. He tried to run when he saw two cops coming his way. He was found with drugs on him. He tried to run and that never looks good. Tommy was also asked about Sasha’s audio diaries. She recorded her diary entry to explain what life was like in Canaryville. She mentioned a familiar stranger who was dangerous.
Tommy said that wasn’t him. He claimed he never hurt her. His father was kicking up a stink downstairs. He felt he should be forewarned as a common courtesy to another cop. He also got a lawyer for his son and was threatening to sue if they question Tommy further without his lawyer present. While they were waiting, they kept looking into Sasha’s life. She visited the campaign office the night she died. The office was closed. Or it should have been. Sasha went back because of Edna. Edna was also working the campaign.
Edna went to a party thrown by a major donor named Alex Feldman. She went to the party and then she blacked out. She woke up covered in bruises. Her body didn’t feel right. She suspected she was raped and she couldn’t live with that fact. She talked to Sasha. Sasha was her outcry witness. Sasha wanted her to come forward, but Edna began thinking and she thought that burying what happened would be like it never happened. Sasha went to the office that night to find evidence to help her friend. And Edna told Alex what Sasha was doing.
They sent Edna wearing a wire in a necklace to another one of Alex’s parties. Burgess acted as a her cousin. She was supposed to be backup when someone stamped her hand and she learned that’s how they were drugging the girls. Burgess locked herself in a room to buy herself time. She fought her attacker. She was so out of it that she couldn’t respond to Ruzek checking in. He grew concerned and he entered the house to look for her. He saved his wife. It just cost them a confession. Alex was still arrested along with the man that attempted to rape Burgess.
Alex admitted that he shoved Sasha. That’s how far it goes. He drove her home as an apology. She just never got the chance to go inside. They checked surveillance dash cams from one of the cars in near Sasha’s home. They found out who the real familiar stranger was. It wasn’t Tommy. It was her best friend, Lily. Lily hated that Sasha was getting out of Canaryville bit by bit. She was feeling left behind and she lost it on her. She killed her and then she made it look like rape. She got lucky in that Sasha had slept with Tommy earlier that night.
Tommy was the screw up. Lily was the good one. Lily told her father what she did and he tried to destroy the evidence. Ruzek stopped him once they had everything figured out. And both father and daughter got arrested for a crime they were willing to pin on Tommy.
And Burgess was afraid that Canaryville wasn’t the best place for Mac because she was black. Most of her school doesn’t look like her. The same goes for her friends.
THE END!
