Officer Dantes Torres was driving over paperwork for Platt as a favor when he got hit. Mercifully, it wasn’t by a bullet. It was by a van. The van was being driven by a corrections officer and he died at the scene. The same for his partner in the backseat. There had been a prisoner with them and he somehow got a hold of one man’s weapon. He knew that Torres was a cop because Torres identified himself as he approached the vehicle. He wanted Torres’s help. He was serving a life sentence for a crime he didn’t commit. He needed Torres to prove he was innocent.
Doing so by gunpoint was never a good way to start a working relationship, but it was necessary. No one else believed this man. They didn’t want to believe him. They put him away and he deserved better. He deserved someone like Torres. Torres has messed up so many times that it wasn’t funny. He still wasn’t fully healed mentally and so he knew a little about second as well as third chances. Torres also had no choice in the matter. He had to help or die. Torres not doing that favor for Platt also alerted her that there was trouble.
Platt later asked his team if they heard from him. They got nothing. It was like he disappeared until someone found the cars from the car crash and the cops were alerted about an escaped prisoner. Voight’s unit was running point on the case. Again, before they knew about Torres. Things changed once they knew one of them was taken hostage. They also got details on the case. The convict was Odell Morgan. He was convicted of killing his wife, Simone. They never found Simone’s body. There was just blood at the house.
Simone and Odell were overheard arguing that night she disappeared. Odell’s brother-in-law also claimed that he saw Odell carrying a large rolled up rug and putting it in the back of his car that night. His in-laws lived across the street from him back then. Odell swears it was all a lie. He tried to appeal the case. He was doing so the day of the accident. Both he and his lawyer knew that the case wasn’t going anywhere. There was just too much circumstantial evidence against Odell. It’s why Odell needed Torres to help him clear his name.
Odell and Simone have a daughter together. The daughter believed the brother-in-law’s story. She thought her dad killed her mom and Odell lost his child this way. So, Carter the brother-in-law has a lot to answer for. Odell had Torres drive off to Carter’s home. Carter wasn’t there. He walked out after he testified against Odell. His wife and son haven’t seen him since then. It was like he was running from something. Which seemed strange because he had already set Odell to prison. Odell couldn’t have been a threat from prison and so Torres started to believe Odell was telling the truth.
Odell was injured from the car crash. He was bleeding out and scaring his former in-laws was no longer issue if Carter wasn’t there. Carter never once looked Odell in the eye in all the years since he testified. Odell just wanted Carter to look him in the eye and finally tell him the truth. Who killed his wife? Torres had a chance to get away from Odell because Odell’s injuries got really bad. Torres chose to instead help Odell back on his feet. He took him to a safe place. They came up with a plan. Torress needed to access the police database.
He borrowed a priest’s laptop to log into the database. He found out that Carter was hanging out with Dion Crews. Crews owns two properties and one was allegedly vacant. Odds are that Carter was staying at the vacant one. The two men drove over there in the priest’s borrowed car. They went to that house. They found Carter. They forced Carter to look in Odell’s eyes and that’s when he came clean. He lied on the stand. They threatened him by showing him pictures of his sleeping son at home with a gun next to his head.
Torres’s cop friends showed up. He said Carter recanted. Odell needed urgent medical care and so he brought him to the hospital while the others stayed behind for whatever Carter could tell them. They were going bring him to the station for further questioning when shots began to fire. Carter was killed in the back of a police car. His family was put in protective custody. And Odell later died from his injuries at the hospital.
It was a conspiracy to kill Simone and frame Odell for it. Torres had to let Odell’s daughter know that. He stopped by her home and he showed her the case files. He told her everything he saw that day riding with her dad.
