In tonight’s FBI International episode, the FBI flyteam headed to the United Kingdom tonight. They were brought in to investigate a death. The body of Emma Byers was found in the pond at university and Smitty suspected it was murder.
The victim was American. She was attending Blackmore University. It was a very prestigious college. It was actually Smitty’s old school.
She went there for a few semesters when she got caught with alcohol. She was of age, but the school has a strict policy about these things and Smitty was expelled. She went on to attend school in Manchester. She fell in love with criminology. And she never looked back.
Smitty getting expelled was a lot tougher on her mom. Her mom had expectations. Which was why Smitty couldn’t wait to leave the UK and she’s returning only now because of the public pressure.
The university received a lot of American money. Those same Americans were now contacting the FBI in droves hoping to learn that the school was still safe for their children. The flyteam unfortunately couldn’t reassure them. They were the ones that pushed for Emma to have an autopsy.
The sergeant with the local police hadn’t wanted to touch the case. He wanted to rule Emma’s death as accidental. It was Smitty that pushed for the autopsy and she’s glad she did because Emma’s death was ruled a homicide. She was bashed over the head. She was thrown into the lake to drown. Emma also fought her attacker.
She has his blood under her fingernails. She has some scratches on her neck. She fought back and the last time she was seen was at the Covington Club. The Covington Club was this prestigious club on campus.
It used to be an all male club until 2013. The female body kept suing until finally they were allowed into the club. Emma was the only woman with the club when she died. Her mother flew to the UK after she was found.
She couldn’t understand why her daughter was with the club. She said her daughter hated that club and its members. It was just the two of them. They talked about everything or so the mother thought. Only Emma didn’t mention joining the club or the assault she suffered in the previous spring.
Emma went to the police to report a sexual assault in the Spring. Somehow that case didn’t go anywhere. Emma didn’t follow through with the complaint and the local sergeant was happy to drop the case. There didn’t seem to be anyone willing to stand up to the Covington Club.
It was the home for several prime ministers, MPs, and even royalty. Smitty went to the club to ask some of the men there about Emma and suddenly a lawyer appeared. The lawyer’s name is Mark Sterling. He was a former member of the Covington Club. He was now representing every young man tied to the club.
Smitty tried to convince the lawyer to let the young men give their DNA. If they’re not guilty, they wouldn’t mind giving up the DNA. The lawyer saw right through her stance.
He told them she has to get a warrant first and he stuck to that stance even as the bodies kept dropping. There was another student that died. His name is Harry. He was also with the Covington Club. He just wasn’t murdered. He committed suicide. Harry was sent a compromising video of himself and he killed himself to keep that video from getting out.
The Covington Club apparently keeps dossier on its members. They collect blackmailing material in case one of them becomes prime minster and they need to call in a favor. The club has information on everyone there. Emma it seems was trying to get that information.
She didn’t join the club for the connections or the internships. She joined because she was looking for her rapist. She must have found him that night because he killed her to cover up what he did. And the local cops never bothered with a rape kit that might have matched the blood under Emma’s fingernails.
Wes later confronted the sergeant. He told him to stop being lazy. The guy must have heard him because he had patrol officers canvass the area.
They found the burner phone that was used to send the compromising video to Harry. It was sent by another member of the club. Wes and Smitty talked to the idiot that bought a burner phone on his credit cards. He sent that video to Harry to keep quiet. They both overheard James Haylett make a pass at Emma. She turned him down. He then said that’s fine because he already had a piece.
James raped Emma. It came out that night. Emma called him a rapist. They were arguing and the next thing they know was that Emma is dead. With the witness’s testimony, the flyteam got several warrants for everything at the Covington club. They also got a warrant to take James’s blood sample.
They were sadly too late to capture James. He left on his father’s private plane and was last seen heading to Russia, but this was going to be the end of the Covington Club. Smitty learned that she didn’t get expelled for the alcohol. She got expelled for reporting another girl.
The other girl stole diamond earrings. She tried to blame it on the housekeeper only Smitty came forward. She reported this girl. The girl’s father sat on the Board of Governors. He had Smitty’s friend deliberately leave the alcohol in Smitty’s room. She got expelled because some posh nuisance didn’t want to be branded a thief.
It was a twenty year old wound for Smitty. She couldn’t help blaming herself back then and so learning the truth freed her. It also made her want to get justice for Emma.
James couldn’t be touched once he landed in Russia. Wes came up with an idea to make sure he never reached Russia. He forced that plane to land.
They made them land in Germany and that’s when James claimed German citizenship. Anyone can buy citizenship if they bought property in Germany. James’s father pulled some strings. He got his son a German passport. He now couldn’t be questioned or extradited from Germany. James looked like he was going to get away again when Raines came up with an idea.
If they could prove that James’s father was in cahoots with the Russians, they could issue sanctions. The team worked together. They managed to freeze his father’s bank accounts.
James’s father could no longer afford James’s German citizenship and so it was nullified. James was arrested. He was extradited back to the UK. He will face charges for Emma’s murder.
The school also wasn’t going to get off. The chancellor was fired. The club was permanently shut down. James’s father vowed revenge but who will believe him now that he couldn’t call in a favor.
THE END!
