Frank Lyon, Maurice Benard Get Candid About Their Egos

Frank Lyon, Maurice Benard Get Candid About Their Egos

Frank Lyon (Bodyguard Frank) and Maurice Bernard (Sonny Corinthos) got together for a chat on the State of Mind podcast on Sunday night, and they talked about ego. It started hilariously, but soon the two General Hospital (GH) stars got to the serious parts. Read on to see how their perspectives merged.

Talking About Ego

Maurice was in a good mood because he researched search engines for Lyon’s backstory. He laughed and nearly cried with good humor because the search results were so diverse. From a plumber to a “land developer in Arlington” decades ago, none of them brought up the right Frank.

Once that was over, Lyon started talking a bit about how he studied martial arts for years. As a kid, he was not afraid to fight, and as an adult, he once lost it as his ego got in the way. Meanwhile, Maurice talked about how he used to “shout” a lot. And, he admitted it was an “ego” thing. In fact, he felt bad after making a scene. So much so that at times he ended up “in tears.”

The Time Sonny’s Bodyguard Lost It

Apart from search engines, it seems that most people know that Frank Lyon is the bodyguard of Sonny Corinthos on GH. And in real life, he seems formidable with his martial arts skills. But for him, ego is a thing as well. Frank related a story about playing basketball. He doesn’t play much now, but at one stage he was “psycho-competitive.”

Lyon told Maurice Bernard a story. In part, he related how he lost it:

So, we’re playing the crappiest team, but our guys are going through the motions and I’m getting pissed off because I hate to lose at anything. And they beat us. So, the crappy team, they take it like that’s their championship. “We beat the champions!” And I lose it. I was like, “I quit, you mother-effers! I don’t play with losers, I’m a winner!” You know, I’m going out of my mind. One of the players as I’m walking away…I grab him, I sweep his leg and I put my foot on his throat.

Shocking himself, Frank said that he couldn’t stop raging “because my mind and ego are so far gone.” After ranting for a long time, he walked away. Unlike Maurice, he said that he “didn’t cry.” However, he thought about it later, wondering, ‘What’s wrong with you? What are you doing?”‘ So I sent a mass text to everybody, and I was like, ‘I apologize…I lost it.'”

He Doesn’t Want To Be That Ego Guy

The ABC actor told the real-life Sonny Corinthos that they went on and won the championship that season. Someone recalled when he lost it and claimed the team needed that rage so they could perform well. However, Frank Lyton stepped back from it. He said, “It’s just a game, because I don’t want to be that guy ’cause he’s in there still, you know, but I don’t want to be that guy.”

What do you think about Maurice and Frank Lyon talking about how they both realized that ego can be detrimental? Neither of them wants to be “that guy” anymore. Shout out in the comments below, and come back here often for all your General Hospital cast news and updates.
