In tonight’s NCIS: Sydney episode, Trigger was earning his keep. He gave the team a puzzle box. They couldn’t solve it. They couldn’t break it. They found themselves at a loss and they had to leave behind it when they got called to a scene. There was a dead US Navy Scientist. His name was Alan Bridges. The doctor was specialized in the scientific field.
He studies bugs. He was in Sydney on assignment. He didn’t seem to have enemies and why would anyone target a bug scientist? Yet, something happened to him. He was infected by an advanced hemorrhagic fever that could be anything from typhoid to Ebola. He wouldn’t have come across those things normally and so there was a chance he was infected deliberately.
Unfortunately, Doc Roy didn’t realize the cause of death at first. He thought Alan died from a fall. He brought him back to his lab. He was working on him and he was a bit short-tempered with everyone.
He even was snapping at Blue who was officially back at work. Blue was wondering what was going on when Doc cut into the bone too easily. It splattered blood on all over them. Doc tried to see why the bone gave way and that’s when he noticed that Alan was deadly infected by something. He didn’t know what.
Doc then followed procedure. He hit the biohazard alarm. He locked in Blue and himself. The rest of the team evacuated the building. They called in Australian version of the CDC. Those people came in hazmat suits.
They tested both Doc as well as Blue. They also locked down anyone who had bodily contact with the victim. This included the police officer that tried to offer first aide to Alan. He was taken to a bio-containment center. They ran more tests on Alan. It was shown he had a special type of Ebola.
His was special because it was chemically engineered. Someone created a form of Ebola that hits and kills within eight hours. It normally takes over within days. This new type couldn’t be treated.
It also could lead to an outbreak. This matter was now too big for NCIS alone. The Prime Minister of Australia has been roped in. The team was hoping maybe those in authority could help them track Alan’s research. Alan was loaned out to an Australian based team. They were researching something so classified that nobody knew what it was. Not even their Australian counterparts.
Things also got bad for Doc. He began experiencing symptoms. He and Blue had to be safely brought to a specialized hospital. Blue kept working. She had a laptop with her. She filled in the team and they told her what they found. They finally spoke to someone that worked with Alan. It was so top secret that the woman refused to name it. She just gave them a file. One that Blue was able to unlock. Alan and his team were working on mosquitos that could be controlled to purposely infect someone.
They planted the tiniest of microchips into bugs before they fully matured. Now, they were able to direct bugs like the mosquitos into doing their bidding. They were the tiniest of drones and they were operated by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. These people, these Americans, gave the world everything from Wi-Fi to the hydrogen bomb. They were unofficially in Australia. They called it project 212. It was supposed to be locked up in the vault at their secure facilty and yet it was missing.
Something they didn’t know happened until NCIS found them by accident. They thought it was Morris. Morris was another scientist. He claimed someone stole his keycard.
Only he was at the same conference that Alan gave a speech. It was most likely where he got infected. They checked surveillance cameras and Morris wasn’t operating anything. He didn’t even take a phone call. He also went straight from that to harassing bar staff all the way to three in the morning. He was close and still couldn’t have done it.
Alan was killed by the project manager at DARPA. DARPA was never supposed to create a new viral strain of Ebola. Harry told his team to do it because he always planned on selling it.
He had them build a bioweapon. Unlike anything anyone has ever seen before. Those people thought they were being patriots and instead they were being used by Harry. He always planned on selling the mosquitos along with the new strain of Ebola and the cure. The one he pretended got stolen. He was in it for the big bucks.
He just didn’t kill Alan. Or the police officer that helped Alan. It was the woman that helped NCIS. She hated being a part of that team and hated that she built a weapon.
She raised the alarm hoping to stop the Americans from ever using it on their enemies. It worked. It was now national news. It will never be used because everyone would know who was behind it. It also got her prison time for killing two innocent people. Harry was also facing trial for treason.
Doc was saved and he came out of his bad mood long enough to be the Doc that they all know and love.
And Mackey solved the puzzle box. It couldn’t be opened because it was all about the journey and not about results.
THE END!
