The Battles continued tonight with Team Snoop. Snoop’s Jerrell and Ralph were the first battle of the night. Jerrell grew up in musical theater. Which could be heard in his audition song. Ralph was a four chair turn so you couldn’t sleep on him either. Ralph and Jerrell chose each other because they both liked each other’s auditions. They also were both R&B. Their voices were completely different. They were each the full package in their own right. Snoop and Lizzo merely helped them reach their full potential during rehearsals.
They had the voice. They just needed permission to use it. Like Lizzo said. They were all looking for the Whitney in them and two men got there in the end. They performed “Lose Control” by Teddy Swims. They both added a layer to the song itself. Ralph has a controlled raspy tone and he knew when to get aggressive with the song. He added that grit to the song that Jerrell played different. Jerell’s tone was smooth like butter. He added a slickness to it. And yet there was a clear winner because Ralph sold that performance just a tad more than Jerrell did.
Team Reba was up next. Her Shan and Peyton were going against each other. They were both one chair turns. Reba turned rather quickly for Peyton and waited till the last possible moment to turn for Shan. It was all methods to her madness because the other judges kicked themselves for not turning for them. They were truly talented. Their vibes matched and that’s how they paired off. They quickly became friends. It added to their song. They got “Don’t Dream Its Over” by Crowded House.
Reba also had the idea to start them off as an acoustic before the band truly came in. They both had such great tones. Shan brought a hippie vibe to it. Peyton brought the grit. They played off of each other so well that it became one of the coaches’ favorites. Again, there was a clear winner. Peyton’s nerves had him start slow and then he grew into confidence onstage. His voice was amazing. It wasn’t to take away from Shan. Shan was also great. She just didn’t shine as brightly as she could have.
Team Michael was soon up. They didn’t show the ingredients that went in that performance. They picked up at the performance itself and that was unfair. The Teo Ramdel vs Elias Gomez battle deserved more recognition than that. They were both so great that Snoop regretted using his one Steal. The two men had performed “Die with a Smile” by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars. It was a perfect duet song. Teo was the winner, but Elias was equally as good and its such a shame he went home tonight.
The final battle of the night went to Team Niall. Niall’s Jack and DEK of Hearts were against each other. One was firmly Pop. The other was Country Pop. Niall tried to bridge the gap with a Mumford & Sons song called “I Will Wait”. Now, the DEK of Hearts were used to harmonizing. The important part to remember about it was that they were used to harmonizing with each other in a three part band. They added Jack into the mix. They had to leave room for Jack and eventually he was harmonizing with the best of them.
Their later performance was the perfect way to end the night. Especially as it ended in a Steal. There was only Michael left with a Steal and he used it to get Jack. Jack was great. His enthusiasm. His joy. It was all perfect. It just couldn’t beat DEK of Hearts because they were a full package. Still, Jack found a new home thanks to tonight. The performance was that good. Niall has really been killing it this season. His team ended the Battles. Then came the Knockouts. The Knockouts were much harder on the coaches than the Battles.
The mega mentors this season for the Knockouts were Zac Brown and Joe Walsh. Like with the Battles, there’s a new element added to the Knockouts. They have the mic drop button. The mic drop button allows America to vote for the best performer to perform at the Rose Parade. The coaches no longer have Steals or Saves. The Rose parade as well as a chance to stay on their team was the only things they could offer from now on out. Up first was Team Reba. Reba’s Aubrey and Leyton were the first Knockout.
The two women were friends. They also both have distinctive voices. Aubrey chose to perform “I’m Gonna Love You Through It” in honor of her dad and his cancer battle. Leyton chose to perform “I Could Use A Love Song” in honor of heartbreak. They chose songs that were important to them. It added a depth to their performances that everyone noticed. Reba and Joe helped them get there. Leyton needed to sing with her eyes open. She and Aubrey also shared this one need in which they needed to know where to place those high notes.
They think they should build to moment. Yet, Joe pointed out that there was no need. They got it and they best flaunt it. Aubrey’s performance stayed with everyone tonight. It got to Reba like nothing else. Reba lost her oldest son to cancer and she was left in tears by Aubrey’s rendition of her friend’s song. Reba had no choice in the matter. She naturally chose Aubrey as the winner. Aubrey was advancing and this was it for Leyton. Sometimes it really was all about song choice. Team Snoop was up next.
Snoop brought a treat for his artists. He bought them all a meal for his favorite fast food place. He said sharing a meal turns friends into family and he wanted them to feel like a family. Snoop also revealed tonight that he made an album with Zac Brown. It’s why Zac became a mega mentor. Zac first helped Kenny and Ralph. Kenny chose “There Goes My Baby” because it fits him best as an artist. The song was also a perfect way to show off his moves. He was a true performer. He just needed to stop straining his voice because even if it was quieter – his voice alone can carry it.
Ralph chose “Dive”. It perfectly explained his relationship with his now fiancé. Ralph proposed to his girlfriend after his audition and she said yes. It wasn’t always smooth. In the beginning, they were a lot of people getting on him because they didn’t think singing was much of a future. He was proving them wrong this season. He chose his song because it allowed him to be vulnerable. He was showing off a new side to his tone this way. Snoop loved both performances. Snoop had fun with this Knockout.
He was sad to lose one of these guys. They were both showstoppers. Snoop could only pick one and he named Ralp as the winner. He said he thought Ralp has the It factor as he could win the whole season. The final Knockout of the night belonged to Team Niall. Niall’s whole family were big Eagles fans. So, it was a real honor for him to sing with Joe Walsh. They had a little moment before they got back to the show. He paired Ava and Sadie together. Ava chose the song “Hopelessly Devoted To You” because its her mom’s favorite song to sing karaoke to.
Ava needed to make her version dreamier. It was Olivia Newton-John. She had to get in the mindset of Sandy. It was the only note for her in rehearsals. Sadie also chose to be brave as well. She chose “Too Good At Goodbyes”. Sam Smith was notoriously difficult to tackle and so Sadie made sure she stood out with this one. She even got a standing ovation at the end. Then again so did Ava when she gave her performance. Niall apologized, but he could only name Ava as the winner because her ability to tell a story was unmatched.
