On tonight’s Brilliant Mind episode, Dr. Oliver Wolf was a great doctor. He was one of the best in his field. It’s everything else that usually fell apart for him and he was once again risking confinement when he broke into his father’s house.
He was off committing a crime while Michelle was being wheeled into the hospital. She got into a nasty car accident. She nearly died several times on the way to the hospital. Wolf quickly returned when he found out it was Dr. Van Markus’s Michelle that was injured. He was worried about the younger doctor. He knew things didn’t look good for Michelle.
There was also something concerning about the other driver. His name is Nick. Nick wasn’t as bad off as Michelle was, but he was constantly laughing. He said he couldn’t stop himself.
They ran a tox screen on him and they also ordered a psych evaluation. The laughter couldn’t be a sign of a mental breakdown if not a complete disregard of human life. It’s best to figure out what caused it. Wolf didn’t want Van to see a laughing kid either. They ran several tests and Dr. Pierce was giving Nick the results of some when he suddenly started laughing again.
Van saw him. No one wanted him to see the kid laughing. It was just unpreventable because Nick was waiting on news of Michelle and it was only one area for Neuro.
Van was pulled away before he did something he regrets. He was angry. It simply wasn’t because of a laughing kid. It was because Michelle’s mother refused to meet his eye. She resents him. He felt she blamed him for Michelle driving that night because Michelle was meeting him at a gala. The mother didn’t want to be around him. She made that clear. And Van was suffering from guilt.
It got worse when Michelle’s test results came in. She was ruled as brain dead. The doctors felt there was no saving her. Wolf apologized to Van that there was nothing to be done.
It was Van that refused to accept it. Van said he needed Wolf to fight and not give him an apology. He wanted Wolf to pull off a miracle like he does best. Only that might not be possible here. Her pupils were blown. He brain looked like one giant bruise because she had already herniated. The only thing left was to perform the final brain death exam.
Wolf was going to perform it. He asked one of the others to join him and Van wouldn’t hear of it. Van demanded to be there for the exam. He said he needed to be there. He just didn’t react well to it. They did several stages of the brain death test and all signs pointed towards Michelle being gone. The final stage was to take her off the breathing tube to see if she could breathe on her own. Wolf knew that the signs pointed towards that being a negative. Its why he let Van talk him out of doing that part until he had tried everything else.
Van was hooking Michelle up to an EEG. He was going to do a mirror test. Dr. Porter was mocking him behind his back when he overheard and punched the guy. Wolf had to pull them apart. The grieving process was getting violent. Michelle’s mother Shauna was getting prepared for the worst possible outcome. She brought in their rabbi to help with so much needed counseling. All it did was give Van an idea. He said that they could use a religious exemption to stop Michelle from being ruled brain dead.
The exemption was put in place for the religious. Michelle was not religious. She also has an advance directive in which she agreed to be an organ donor. She wanted to help others even in her final moments. Van was disregarding that because he didn’t want to lose her. He knew that the exemption was a law in New Jersey.
He came up with the not so bright idea of taking Michelle there so that she couldn’t be ruled brain dead and he just needed to borrow an ambulance. He asked his friend to talk to her girlfriend the EMT. And she did because she knew that people couldn’t just borrow ambulances.
She was banking on being told no. The fantastic four were all banking on it. They love Van. They wanted to support him and they couldn’t with this. Michelle was brain dead. The final stage would reveal it. Only Nash, Dang, and Kinney weren’t told no. They were given an ambulance. They put Michelle in it and their bosses didn’t find out about until they were able to treat Nick. Nick has a condition caused by one too many hits to the head. The laughing thing didn’t start with the car accident. He was known as the Joker because he laughs at tense moments. He also cries when he wants to laugh.
Nick had been treated with medication as well as therapy. The accident was also ruled no fault. The weather turned those roads into ice. Nick saw them loading Michelle into an ambulance and he asked them to give a letter to Michelle’s family. Luckily, what the doctors did wasn’t a crime because they never left the state. They ended up turning around when it finally hit Van that Michelle was lost. He imagined her waking up and it being a miracle and then he came back down from that dream.
They brought her back to the hospital. They finished the exam. Michelle was ruled brain dead and Van made sure he was the one that called it. Then he let himself be comforted by his friends. Even Dr. Porter apologized for his thoughtless comments earlier. He’s been in Liam’s shoes. He told Van that dying of a broken heart would just orphan his son and let her become like him. Its been years since he lost both of his parents. He was still grieving. Van realized he didn’t want that for his son. He spoke to Shauna. She said that he was a great dad and that Michelle thought the same.
Van included Liam in the donor walk that they do for donor patients. Afterwards, he told Wolf that he needed to take time off to be with his family. They needed to heal right now and he couldn’t be bogged down with work. Dr. Nash was also taking the job at the sports clinic. He wanted to be as great of a doctor as Wolf and give patients someone who would listen to them. He could best do that at the sports clinic. He can give to others what no one gave to him. And so losing two members of his team forced Wolf to go back to when his night was interrupted.
Wolf broke into his dad’s house again. Someone walked in on him. It just hadn’t been his dad. It was Sofia and she might possibly be a relative.
THE END!
