In tonight’s NICS: ORIGINS, NCIS Special Agent Gary Callahan was one great dog. He was born the runt of the litter. His hindlegs were underdeveloped so he didn’t get sold or go to a happy family.

He got dropped off at the shelter. Probably a kill shelter that Gary must’ve sensed. Gary learned to walk by surviving on the streets. He ran away from the shelter. He wandered around until he went under the house of an annoying woman. She called animal control. It was to Gary’s benefit that Franks happened to be working for them at the time. He found Gary Callahan and he rescued him.

They’ve been together for nine years because Franks became Gary’s home. Gary lived with Franks. He even shared the same bed with Franks. He was there for him after Tish left. They were best buds and it had looked like their friendship was coming to an end on tonight’s episode. They got called in on a robbery/homicide.

The victim was killed when two men broke in and they tripped the silent alarm. It must’ve sent them in a panic because they grabbed the most convenient item. The watch off the store owner’s wrist.

They left behind a sticky substance when they did so. They also left behind a footprint. Gary was brought in to catch a scent and he did. He followed it into the woods behind the store where he found one of the killers. The guy tried to stay hidden, but Gibbs spotted him so he took off and Gary was hot on his trail.

They heard the man yelp before they heard it from the dog. The perp stabbed Gary as he escaped. There was no 24 hour vets open. Franks called in Tango and Tango stopped the bleeding.

It was really bad. Gary didn’t look like he would make the night. Franks also called in Herm in case Herm needed to say goodbye. Gary wasn’t just important to him. He was important to everyone at the station. Especially Herm. Herm was in charge of Gary while on the job. He normally has Gary’s leash with him.

It kept Gary from chasing down the perp himself and you knows whose to blame for Herm not getting the call to come into work? Gail! Gail forgot to pass on the message to Herm. And Franks didn’t want to wait around because their “stupid secretary” forgot to make the call.

Soon word got out about Gary’s injury. Artie even showed up. Artie was Gary’s first handler.

Artie started the K-9 unit at NIS and they didn’t have much money. Tish heard about it. She nominated Gary for the job. They needed volunteers back then because there was no money in the budget.

Fast-forward to the present day, Gary was kept alive by Tango. He then took a turn for the worst. He was rushed into surgery when the first available vet opened. He survived. He just might not ever walk again and Herm blamed it on Franks.

Herm reminded Franks that Gary wasn’t some pet. He was a trained agent. He shouldn’t have missing more training because Franks took him to get family photos at JCPenny.

Herm accused Franks of treating Gary like a dog and that he should be happy now that’s all he can be. Gary was done as an agent. NIS’s secretaries were throwing him a farewell party. NIS meanwhile found the man attacked Gary. He was injured himself. His name is Adam Plum. He was homeless. He was actually arrested after he tried to rob that same store once before.

Plum was arrested. They tested his knife. The only blood found on it was Gary’s. Plum didn’t kill the store owner. NIS figured that his partner must have done it. There was a group of teen girls in the area. They were asked if they saw anything that night. Of the three, two didn’t recognize Plum. The third did.

She said that Plum was with another sketchy guy who kept staring at her. They arrested Plum for murder. They tried to find his friend and there was no point because Plum claims he didn’t kill Javier Martinez.

He said he tried to come in when he found Javier already dead on the floor. He ran off when he heard sirens. He wasn’t with anyone and he didn’t think anyone would believe him.

Funnily enough, the evidence proved he was right. He didn’t kill Javier. The people that did were those teenage girls. They were privileged and they wanted to feel a thrill. They went there with one of their dad’s hunting knives. They tried to steal Javier’s watch. He put up a fight that turned into a brawl he lost. He was killed and those girls are facing life in prison.

Plum will still face time for injuring Gary, but Franks promised to help him turn his life around after his brief stint. Franks would later go to the decommissioning ceremony for Gary.

It was because Gary became an agent that Franks did so as well. He wanted to still be a part of Gary’s life. The sweet part was that Gary started walking again. He could still be an agent so the ceremony turned into a celebration. Gary still had a few good years left in him. And Franks and Herm forgave each other for what happened to their dog.

THE END!
