The Top 9 Semifinalists performed on tonight’s all new episode. They were all one performance away from the Finale. Yet, some rose to new heights for the occasion better than others.
Up first was Team Legend’s KH Willis. He’s been on this journey since he was fourteen years old. His father was a pastor. He grew up in the church. It was his mom who introduced a love of R&B. He hopped onboard and has never given up. His song tonight was about that resilience. He performed “Higher Ground” by Stevie Wonder.
It was great! KJ has grown in confidence onstage. He made people excited about tonight. He was the perfect person to open the show. Team Kelly followed up with Mikenley Brown. Mikenley was her Pop girlie. She has such amazing fashion sense and she picks music that reaches out to the audience. It was a great skill. Mikenley chose the song Sam Smith’s “I’m Not the Only One”. Sam was a difficult artist to cover, but Mikenley did justice to his song. She even had her fellow contestants appreciate her style from backstage.
Mikenley held her own. The other coaches said this was easily her best performance. Her coach was very proud of her because she felt she brought out her competitive side tonight. Next up was Team Adam. Adam’s Jeremy Keith was someone he took pride in stealing from Team Legend. He and John first performed together. Only John couldn’t hold onto him. Jeremy was destined for Adam’s team. He was a R&B soul. He worked often as a background vocalist and he was ready to step forward. He wished to be seen. And he did that with his song choice.
Jeremy chose Babyface’s “Whip Appeal”. He actually met Babyface once. He met him at an award show and ever since then he’s been a big fan. Adam especially liked his song choice because the 90s R&B was making a comeback. Gen Z thought it was vintage and that hurt the feelings of proud millennials everywhere. Speaking of pride, Jeremy was his coach’s. He brought the energy and there hasn’t been one bad performance thus far. They all just needed to remember what their coaches taught them.
In the Battle of the Champions, it was up to the audience to decide who will move onto the finale. The audience was made up of former contestants and winners. They get to decide what comes next. The coaches just get to sit back and enjoy the music. Jeremy was followed by Syd Millevoi. She came in as a powerhouse. She blew everyone away because she can most definitely sing. Its just that at the start she lacked the emotional connection. She didn’t let herself be vulnerable. She only wanted to be perfect.
Syd explained why tonight. She said she was afraid to be vulnerable because of her parents divorce. Her parents didn’t merely break up and coparent. Her father essentially abandoned her. She told this story on the first episode in which she played down what her dad did. She instead talked about how great it was moving in with her grandparents. Or how she loved coming from a big family. She said it all with a smile and that smile proved to be false. She was putting on a brave face because that’s what she’s gotten used to.
Syd was talked to be herself. He true self tonight. She chose the song ”Into You” by Ariana Grande. She stripped it down and she allowed herself to be vulnerable. Now, this was Syd so she hit that high note when she lived at the end only the coaches were proud of how far she’s come. She did Pop proud. Next up was Team Adam. Adam’s Jared Showmaker was his Southern Rock artist. Adam spent a little longer in rehearsals with Jared because Jared was caught in a moment of self-doubt. He was afraid to go after those big moments.
Adam told him he was vocally capable of everything. He could put his own spin on it. He could be a rocker and still be soulful. He literally chose the song “Soulshine” by Larry McCray. He offered a beautiful new form of tone in his rendition. He still was a surprise tonight because he always showed news sides to himself. The other coaches were impressed. Jared was followed by Team Kelly’s Liv Ciara. Liv first went on the show some seasons ago and she didn’t get a chair turn. She then came back this season where she got Kelly to turn for her.
Kelly saw her potential from the beginning. Adam also tried to get her on his team and no such luck for him. Liv hasn’t always had the best performances, but she always had heart. She gave it her all and unlike some she didn’t need to push herself to find it. Liv found herself on that stage. She gained confidence. She also pushed herself to the top of the pack with her performance of “Flashdance… What a Feeling”. Yup, from the movie. She completely made it her own by stripping it down. She even left the other coaches worried that she might win after tonight.
Next up was Team Adam’s Alexia Jayy. She was an insane vocalist. She’s been pretty laidback so far and that changed tonight. Alexia chose a song that spoke to her soul. She chose of her favs. She chose Aretha Franklin. Aretha was also someone hard to cover. Yet, Alexia did it. She did more than that. She did justice to it. She performed Aretha like she was singing for her life and in a sense she was. She was hoping to become a finalist in order to be a winner. She did everyone so proud that she made a huge fan out of Kelly.
Kelly loved herself some Aretha. Alexia’s rendition of “I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)” blew everyone away. She came for a fight and it will be a crime if she wasn’t going to be sitting pretty with Liv in the next round. Team Kelly was up next. JW Griffin impressed everyone with his last performance. It was his best performance to date and tonight was all about topping his best. He chose the song “Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground”. It was like a lullaby and that’s what JW performed it as. He has such a beautiful voice that it puts people at ease. It makes them feel emotion.
JW or J-Dub as he’s affectionally called put on a great performance. One that will stick with people long after the episode. The last artist up tonight was Team Legend’s Lucas West. He has such a fun and raspy voice that John knew he had to do it justice. Lucas chose the song “Maybe I’m Amazed”. He literally took on a Beatle. Paul McCartney was still performing it because that was good. Lucas really got the blood pumping. John’s guidance with Lucas helped him believe in himself and now he holds a place in everyone’s hearts.
Several Semifinalists were eliminated tonight, but Lucas wasn’t one of them. He made it to the finale. The same for Team Adam’s Alexia. Team Kelly has two people in the Finale and they were Liv and Mikenley.
Three women and a guy in the Finale this season.
THE END!
