Jane the Virgin premieres tonight on the CW with an all new Thursday October 13, season 1 episode 1 premiere episode called “Chapter One.” Tonight, a doctor’s office mishap causes Jane to become pregnant with a specimen meant for someone else in the series premiere of this comedy-drama about a chaste young woman who struggles to tell her religious family about her unplanned in-vitro pregnancy.
On tonight’s episode Jane Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez) is a driven young woman studying to become a teacher, nursing a dream to be a writer, and supporting herself with a job at a hot new Miami hotel. All the years of watching telenovelas with the two women who raised her – her sexy, young-at-heart mother, Xiomara (Andrea Navedo) and her still-devout grandmother, Alba (Ivonne Coll) – have given Jane a slightly unrealistic view of romance, but her wonderful fiancé, Michael (Brett Dier), is supportive and even understands her decision to “save herself” until marriage.
All of Jane’s meticulous life plans are turned upside down, however, when she sees her doctor for a routine check-up and is accidentally artificially inseminated with a specimen meant for someone else. Now, Jane is faced with the most important decisions of her life – a life that has suddenly become as dramatic, complicated and unpredictable as the telenovelas she has always loved. Justin Baldoni, Jaime Camil and Yael Grobglas also star. Brad Siberling directed the episode written by Jennie Snyder Urman.

On tonight’s premier episode of Jane the Virgin, we met Jane. 13 and a half years ago she made a promise to her beloved grandmother. And to this day she’s kept to that promise. She swore she would wait until she was married to have sex and though it’s been hard – especially on her boyfriend, Michael – she hasn’t lost her resolve.
However, while her boyfriend hasn’t complained, she does get some flak from her friends. Lina calls what she’s doing to Michael torture.
Yet, Jane for the most part isn’t easily swayed. She’s happy with her life as it now and doesn’t see any reason why it should change. And it just unfortunate that life doesn’t always follow carefully laid out plans. When she went for her normal as in annual doctor’s visit, she received a shock. Her regular doctor was out of the office and so she had to use a stand-in who quite clearly never even glanced at her chart.
The negligence became obvious when the doctor, Luisa, accidentally inseminated her rather than perform something she was supposed to do like a possibly Pap smear or an ultrasound. Then, after Luisa realized her mistake; she never bothered to tell her patient. Either of them. Jane who was inseminated by mistake and the other patient who happened to be her sister-in-law, Petra.
Petra wanted to use her husband’s sperm to get pregnant. She noticed he was losing interest in her and she thought a baby could win her her husband back. So instead of telling Petra what she did – Luisa inseminated her with saline. Afterwards, she consulted with a lawyer friend and they both agreed to keep the whole incident quiet.
And it would have stayed quiet if Jane hadn’t beaten the odds of only 20 percent and become one of the lucky few!
Two weeks after the procedure, Jane was pregnant and that meant Luisa finally had to fess up to what she did. First she informed her sister-in-law and her brother. They didn’t take the news well. And then she had to tell Jane who strangely reacted to the news a lot calmer than even her mother did. Xiomara Villanueva wanted Luisa’s head. She believed the doctor should be put in jail for what she did to Jane.
Jane on the other hand simply wanted out of Luisa’s office. Though the first place she thought of going to was probably not her best idea. She went to Michael’s and because he thought she arrived early for their dinner date – he sprung his surprise on her. He proposed.
He knew that marriage wasn’t part of their plan yet and still he wanted to marry her. So she told him her news and that benched all talks of marriage for a while. But, seeing as he thought she would say yes, he had already invited their families over for what he thought would be a post-engagement celebration.
Hence they had to pretend to be engaged in front of friends and family. And Michael ended up running into a face he wish he hadn’t. He saw a guy at the party and it seems like he has secrets that can be used against him so he warned this third party to not push him.
You’d never know, but maybe Michael isn’t as perfect as he first appeared!
No one knew what was really going on behind the scenes. And before she knew it the party was over and reality had to be faced. Jane didn’t want to have baby. She had a plan and she wanted to be ready for motherhood. Not have a pregnancy come out of nowhere.
That’s why when she went to a meeting with Raphael, Petra’ husband and the baby’s father, she told him she couldn’t do it. She was sorry about him losing out, but she had to make the decision that was best for her.
Although Jane’s decision affected more than just Raphael being a father. Without a child, he decided to cut his losses with Petra. He told her he wanted a divorce. Truth be known they were heading towards it anyway.
But out of desperation Petra had played her last card earlier. She had Luisa call and tell Jane about Raphael’s cancer. And Jane, because she thought this was Raphael’s only opportunity to have kids and that her child would be going to a happy home, changed her mind. She was going to have the baby and give it to Petra and Raphael.
Petra told her husband the news and then she “forgave” him for suggesting divorce earlier. He wants a child and she wants his money. 5 years of marriage equals 10 million for her thanks to their pre-nup! So this is their marriage now – a sham!
And even though life is about to get a whole lot hectic – Jane proposed to Michael and he said. So she’s having a baby, getting married, and her biological father (a telenovela star) has just reappeared!
